Bone stock barn find 96 Ram Cummins 5.9 Twelve valve. 147k on the clock my new daily driver. It’s gonna get some power soon but before I blow the transmission up I should get it capable of handling 500hp and 500tq. I don’t know much about transmissions. Where should I start on the transmission? I have the 47RE auto. Thoughts?

Run the stock one until it dies a horrible death then get a PATC mega viper 47re. buy once cry once. Mostly great reviews, more positive than negative. outside of that there is a guy somewhere in riverside whose name I can never remember but it ends in "Maine" he was a legendary 4XRE builder.

100% billet lockup converter, or you'll cook it if you turn that 12v up.

Also use AFC live, don't grind the fuel plate..... it's so cheap there is no excuse to not have fine control over your setup.

When you install your EGT make sure the truck is idling when you drill and tap the exhaust log.... you want the shaving to move through the turbo as they are made and not stack up in front of it and get swallowed all at once.

Have seen the stock 47RE eat 32psi at 75mph with a loaded bed and the head lifted before the transmission tapped out.... so your mileage may vary lol

I just solved my trans issue, a simple band adjustment, but while doing my research, I talked to PATC.

I am super impressed with them, from just chatting on the phone and also from the things I read.

I also viewed the ATSG service manual, and now understand why so many times you hear of a rebuilt trans failing after 20,000 miles.. So many things to go wrong, with all new parts, and the guys who rebuild them have to be super careful.

The 4XRE/H trans is actually a very solid platform, it shares a ton with the legendary 747. Very simple, and very robust, but if you make even one mistake when rebuilding them and everything is not lined up perfectly in your stack.... KABOOM.

The only issue I have EVER had with my 46RE (mind you it has been getting beat on for years!) was my pressure transducer started failing giving me some odd shifting and then it would not shift from first unless I lifted. swapped that out with a kit that replaced all the electronics inside and it has been flawless (until the motor died a terrible death lol)

PATC is pretty solid honestly, if my 46 ever croaks, I'm torn between the builder in riverside and the MegaViper.
