Can someone tell me what this is? I'm guessing it's the magnet that sits inside the differential housing, but look closer... It's bent up.

The gears seem to look good though, no missing teeth or anything.

It couldn't be the crush sleeve, it would have to be sliced up the side for it to come off the pinion........

Yup...yer right. So I'm wonderin'...did he check to see if it's magnetized?

Wanna make sure it's not something of importance. And I pulled the cover to check and make sure the gears were in good shape before I bought it. Now I'm getting the old gasket off and making a new one out of RTV so it can be sealed properly again.

I did, it didn't stick to the sides, but there's a little patch of grease at the bottom and it did stick to that, and it acted magnetized.

By the looks of the case some one has been in there before. It could be a magnet that some one put in for some reason.

I don't think its a magnet because that patch of grease is the only thing it acted magnetized to, so I think that's the magnet. I'm still not sure what the piece is, but I figure its still ok since the gears are still rotating freely with no lockups or anything.

Well, I wouldn't put anything loose like that back in...what does everyone else think? I just hope it's not a clip or other part from your lsd.

The thought that is is a piece of the crush sleeve...not good! It looks about the right thickness. Perhaps it was a "first attempt" by the mfr and the piece was never found.

Does the pinion have any linear (in and out) or side to side movement? It isn't split on the other side where it's smashed in right?

No the piece is not split and it didn't seem to have any play in the gears, but I'll check again later just to make sure.

Checked it, it is solid... No play in any of the gears whatsoever. I took a picture of what I'm talking about that I think is the magnet...

It sits at the bottom and that's where the metal piece was. Like I said though, everything looks good and is still moving freely, so as far as I'm concerned, it's ok. I'm gonna go up to the service dept at a car dealership tomorrow and get one of their techs to look at it and see if they know what it is.

Yup thats a magnet...the other piece is something it caught.

Don't throw it back :). Toss it out. Hopefully it's not an issue.

So you think I should just go ahead and seal it up?

I would, looks like someone may have "lost" something while inside it. If the rear is on a workbench and you drop a clip or something it will fall into an oil passage and be a bear to take out. It may be someone dropped it and didn't bother tryin to take it out and magnet caught it.
I'd seal it up and fill with good oil.
