Ok here is the skinny. My 110 converters never worked from the time I picked up my truck. Due to my daughters travel softball and my work I was too busy to get to the dealer. So finally made the time to get the repair. I did tell my salesman that they were not working about a week after pickup.

So drop truck off. Get a phone from service asking if the 110s ever work. I said no. Next phone call I get and they say they found the problem. The service said that when my radar detector was installed they left a couple of bare wires that caused the short. Again I explained that they had never worked. So after paying 220.00 bucks to get the repairs and getting my truck back.

So the next day I was off work so I took the truck to where I had the detector installed. I explained what the dealer said. They asked if they could look at it. A few mins later they pulled me back into the shop and showed me where a single power wire was directly into the fuse box, ie no splicing or fooling with any of the existing wires. So there was no way the detector caused the short.

So when I called the service department, I asked them to clarify what they found. Same story. So when I confronted them on what was shown to me they did not know what to say. I explained that this should have been covered under warranty and I wanted a refund of money.

Next day my salesman called me and said they are refunding my money and apologized and that the service guy was being talked to. I have a pretty good report with my salesman and I told him that he was about to lose a customer.

I am still pretty upset about it but glad they decided to refund my money. What happened to the days of honest service?

Talked to.... he should be fired! That's terrible! I'd be pissed!

I've been out of the industry for several years now but I know that labor on warranty work used to pay less than the same repair not covered under warranty. I doubt that has changed.
Sounds like this tech needed extra Christmas money. He should absolutely be "talked to", at the very least.

I have heard that...dealers wonder why they aren't used more often...

What ended up being wrong with the 110 converter?

According to the tech there were a cpl of exposed wires that shorted a board:angry94:. In all honesty now not 100% sure as I am not sure what to believe. It is fixed and working.

It's not just dealers. The Mitchell Labor Manual that the majority of shops use gives different labor times for standard or warranty jobs. Any shop that uses them does it; Firestone, Goodyear, NTB, etc.

I worked for a couple different companies, they both used Mitchell and I always got screwed if an alternator, CV axle or whatever failed during the warranty period.
The alternator job that paid 1.0 hour to install the first time now pays .6 to .8 hours to re-install under warranty and some shops don't pay techs for the diagnostic if it ends up being a warranty issue.

Really? That screws the tech and doesn't promote a fair working enviroment, with that said you don't bite the hand that feeds you either.

It doesn't hurt a good tech too much. It's more of an annoyance, really. A good tech, in a good shop, can work 40 or 50 hours a week and "flag" 75-100 hours. The occasional warranty job isn't going to break them.
But, you can see why they push you to go with OEM-quality parts. :)
Unfortunately, you do run into the random guy who will do anything not to lose that 2-tenths of an hour on warranty work. Sounds like this one got busted.

In this situation i would have thrown the magnusson-moss (sp?) act in their face. Its an act that covers you or i in this case. stating the dealer HAS to fix the problem under warranty if its not directly related to the aftermarket installed items. Unfortunately not a lot of consumers know it exists and dealers try to play the game and tell you stuff is not covered if you install aftermarket parts.

what alot of people dont realize is that when they buy an add-on accessory from the dealer about 85% of the time its contracted out to an audio shop or accessory shop. then the dealer just says they cover it for the warranty period.
