USB mp3 audio question

hey guys,
I just got a 2012 ram 1500 big horn edition.
I have the stock, non infotainment radio. I have a usb port in the upper glove box. I have tried plugging in a stock usb thumb drive but I cannot choose it by hitting "aux" button. Is there some special type of drive for this? manual states iPod but I'm not going to buy one just for this. I would rather use a usb drive if possible.

Not sure about the 12. But my 16 has two usb. One in the front (non media) and one in the middle arm rest storage( media ).

My 13 Big Horn has a USB plug in center console, and it is pretty much plug in and play, BUT I have the 8.4 screen radio

Yup, the 09-12, it's only for charging. Even with the premium system in the truck, you can't play directly from the USB in the system, just download to the HD and play from there. A touch annoying, but it works. If only they hadn't used the QNIX OS....
