So about a month ago, on my 2016 crew cab big horn, check engine light comes on. I drive to get the codes read, then all of a sudden all these random warnings come on....do not turn truck off, do not put into park, service shifter....then, it won’t shift out of first gear. Luckily I was close to a dealership, they have it a few days and install a new shifter. All fixed good to go. 2 weeks later same thing, but it was shifting ok. I was get it to the dealership I bought it from, and they said the valve body in the transmission shorted and needed replaced. Just got it back today after ten days. Seems to be fine now. Anyone else ever hear of this happening? Just hit 38k miles, luckily it was all covered by the power train warranty. Just a little nervous I bought a lemon

It was likely the solenoid and not the valve body itself, but whatever neither of those are terribly expensive items. I'm not 100% on the specifics with the zf8. Seriously don't worry about those, less then 500 each. Ask what the price would have been if you paid, I always do. The zf8 is one of the cheaper transmissions out there even if you need a full replacement sometimes.

So I got the truck back, seems good to go now but time will tell. I can’t tell if I’m paranoid of it happening again but I swear it seems different. As I pull in the driveway and come to a stop it seems like it changes gears from 3,2,1 quickly and a tiny nudge when I’m at a stop and put it into park. Who knows, but today the dealer called and asked me to bring it back, so that they can hook it up to the computer and have ram remotely check the readings? Never heard of this before is this normal? Seems like a good thing. The service manager said ram called and wanted to monitor it for a day.

Yeah, sometimes a computer can fix what is wrong with modern transmissions. They need to see the truck. Generally they fix an issue and that's that, but they don't need to hook it up to CPU everytime, that would be a waste of time and money. But sometimes if the issue persists, they absolutely need to hook it up.
