Valvoline NextGen

pqia front page

On PQIA's front page they explain that Valvoline not only failed the first test for NOACK but after talking with Valvoline they retested and it failed with almost the same numbers. NOACK is an oils tendency to evaporate under operating temps, and a lower number is better. Next Gen's numbers are very unsatisfactory. if you are running this I would check your oil often and consider doing an oil analysis. No moly either.

conventional oil choices

PQIA tested some conventional 5w20's and here are those results. Quaker State and Penzoil conventional oils look pretty good. Man 272 PPM MOly makes me proud of the penzoil.

Good thing I've never used Valvoline...for anything lol. Maybe I'll make an oil chart too based on MSDS and testing...for kicks. Pennzoil seems to have their 'ish together all-around.

Good info. Not surprised Penzoil conventional did ok. It's the Chrysler factory fill and Chrysler recommended oil. So, I'd assume its also the oil that they base all their OCI recommendations on.

Yeah, that penzoil is surprisingly good, literally the best numbers I've seen on conventional oil. High Calcium, Low Noack, High Moly. It would make for a great argument to run that on a low change interval against a synthetic.

I wonder how their Platinum or Ultra compares to the conventional.

Its what I plan to use, at least for a while. Just because Ram recommends it and I know it to be good oil.

It is rather pricey for conventional oil at around $5/qt, but at least it isn't snake oil. LOL

You've seen it I'm sure, but here it is again. The synthetics are pretty equal on paper but what it doesn't show is the impurities that conventional oils have, even that nice looking penzoil. What is baffling a lot of oils guys are the NOACK numbers. The theory is some companies have found some viscosity improvers that is making their oils look real good on paper, but at the price of having oils more subseptable to shear, read here. I've never seen a NOACK that low on conventional oil. I would bet it is a characteristic of an additive and not the oil. Now the real interesting fact is the noacks of the two penzoil synthetics. Does Ultra use a combo of group 4 and 5 to achieve this or a viscosity improver? And if it is an VI why don't they just add it to platinum as well? And why the heck is the conventional oils noack so much better then platinum.

It makes my head spin………..

I think that's why I'm inclined to let the auto maker figure it out and make a recommendation. LOL!

I'm with you, nice to have some information but getting a little technical for me to follow without some notes to reference. Although guess I will have to read up about diesel oils if I go with the EcoDiesel in my truck.

It is disappointing that the consumer doesn't have the information and more disappointing that US laws are more relaxed then other countries that force integrity in their oil formulations. To make it worse, companies keep changing their formula with zero notice, like RP removing the Moly or a popular self proclaimed "group 4" company now using group 3 in all of their formulas. PQIA just helps us get a minimum standard in oil choices, guys like me wouldn't mind someone helping us get the maximum standards in oil choices. We are left to our own devices on that.

As for letting the dealer choose, my truck was knocking like hell on dealer oil, so for me that choice is out the window.

Not the dealer. The manufacturer recommendation. Big difference.

Or just follow the recommendation in the owners manual until you read enough to second guess the Chrysler engineers…….

Dear lord, just reading this is making me confused. Burla, It's awesome that you know so much about this stuff and share it with us. But sometimes, things need to be clarified for us in laymans terms haha.

Maybe make a thread explaining the charts of oils, and how to determine the best for your application? I'd read that.

Just want a good oil for stock 5.7 that I can get without braking the bank and will be good for the engine.
