Hi all, today a very odd problem surfaced with my 2012 ram 1500 5.7. Note: I recently had cam and lifters replaced, deleted MDS, added a hellcat oil pump. Mechanics broke a manifold bolt and repaired that as well.

Today I’m at work as a contractor, it was about 1 degree Fahrenheit. I attempt to leave a job site and hit a pile of lumber going about 3mph right as I accelerate. I check for damage, there is none as I believe I hit the stack of lumber with my tire.

I carry on driving and after a few minutes my engine shuts off, I pull off with no power steering. All my dash lights come on and my gear lights all turn green. I shut car off and back on and everything is normal. I continue driving and same thing happens. Pull off at an auto mechanic, he checks for obvious damage and sees none. I drive the rest of the day with no issues until going home.

On interstate at about 60mph my truck suddenly downshifts into 4th gear and all lights come on again. After a minute some dash lights go off except ABS control. My truck is stuck in 4th gear as if I’ve selected it (see pic below) and I cannot shift it up/down with the toggle, so I continue my drive in 4th gear. Stop at a store and get back to truck and it starts up normally and I drive home normally.

I’m probably going to take this back to the shop that worked on my truck tomorrow but curious if anyone has any idea. It seems like an electrical or computer issue to me. Please see pics taken at moment car reacted while on freeway and moments later when some dash lights turned off. Note that tire pressure light was already on because I need to air up.

Thanks for any insight!

Oh another note. I’ve noticed since the work mechanic did that my heater and lights would pulse. Not sure if this shows an alternator problem or what. Thanks!

Depending on what tire you hit the pile of lumber with you may have knocked a ground loose, there is one in the driver side wheel well on the frame. If that’s not it you may need to find a wiring diagram for your truck and see if there’s any wires roughly in the area of impact

Did you look for any signs of damage under the truck ? What side did you hit the lumber with ?

I’d check for CAN bus issues you deleted MDS but did your transmission know this ? ?
