Well if I got the truck I would then have a truck payment. So kinda hesitant. But if I got them down to a good price and sold my truck I could pay for it in cash.

Price is not out of line to me at all,I have seen those years command more in our area.
Miles are not an issue on the motor at all, just look and make sure that you do not see any obvious leaks of fluid.

As already stated the front ends are suspect(ball joints being the major issue)and ALL 24v Cummins truck had issues with premature lift pump failure.Ask them if the truck has any engine codes in it and have they placed a gauge on to check fuel pressure at the VP44 at all.If the trans is an issue you will find it in a simple drive as usually they will just feel like a mush pit when they shift and are not crisp.Another known issue with trucks that sit outside all the time in the 2nd Generation trucks is lower door rot in both the main doors and the quad doors.

For the price I would not pass on this one as it really is a good deal. Then throw in the fact that numbers of 2500's and 3500's in Forest Green Metallic that were Sport Package optioned were very low.

Too me it looks like a lonely truck calling for a new home.......,

Things to look for:

I was looking at all the pictures, and the picture of the engine bay I see the oil stick is missing? And I am wondering why there is oil all around the filler cap. I would check all fluids for instance, radiator should be clean & green and no rusted water in the mix and at proper level. And check the overflow bottle also it should be green. Transmission, should shift 4 times + overdrive. Tranny should be check in N running, after the engine & tranny is at normal operational temp. Be sure you check both side of the stick and always fill on the low side. Now the fluid should be nice and red and no burnt smell. Check to see if it has a lift pump by the starter or has been upgraded to in tank module. Be sure to check out the 4X4 hi and low. Also do a history search vin # to see how many owner, accidents, maintence what was install. I hope I didn't scare you. These engines are built to last..

Oh yea I know they are built to last. Thanks for the run down. I notices the oil all over the cap and that has me worried. But the thing that worries me the most is that the truck has been backed into something. The bumper is messed up and so it the tailgate. It also has cancer on the tailgate and the bumper. So I may pass on this one and go for one in better shape.

OK so the ruling comes down to do I drive enough to warrant a cummins.

Roughly I travel 500 to 700 miles a week for work. Now with that much wear and fuel costs is my math right. If I got rid of the truck and bought a cummins would my repair bill and gas bill of the new truck be less than my gasser. My math says it wouldn't change. What are your all thoughts.

i'd go with the second gen, cheaper, less miles, and in my opinion, better styling. but thats just me. although it almost seems like there is a bigger aftermarket for 3rd gens, i see that stuff everywhere, but don't see 2nd gen stuff as often

You really do got diesel fever... I caught it in April after a casual test drive of a truck that was hanging out in the used lot. The only cure to this is sitting in my driveway now and I have absolutely no regrets at all.

BTW: I like your Ram - reminds me of my first Ram, a '94 Sport.

Thanks Sage. Yea I do got the fever had it for a while. I really want a mega cab cummins but I cant fork over the 26k+ for one used. So thought a moderately priced cummins might fit the bill. Im still on the fence. Cummins = awesome. But expensive to drive but economical in some sense. I kinda wanna go to one older vehicle to save some money on tags and what not. But man I love my car. Bahhhhhh Im so stuck.
