I know lots of people are not a fan of this, but I think it looks great. First attempt ever.

3 layers of VHT
4 layers of clear
1500 grit wet sand
Meguiars compound with a Harbor Freight DA Polisher
Meguiars Polish
Meguiars wax

How will it hold up to car washes?

Could you do the same to tint headlights?

1. Remove light from truck
2. Mask off the reverse light (optional)
3. Scuff the original factory finish with 600 grit sand paper. This will leave a dull finish.
4. Clean light with alcohol, removing all finger prints, sanding dust, and contaminates
5. Spray 2 or 3 light coats of VHT or other taillight tint product. Wait 5 minutes between coats
6. Remove the reverse light masking if applied
7. Spray 4 light coats of an acrylic clear coat product. Wait 5 minutes between coats.
8. Allow 2 hours after final clear coat to dry.
9. After 2 hours, wet sand the clear coat finish with 1500 grit sand paper. Sand until it is totally dull, and no shiny spots left
10. Use rubbing compound either by hand or with a power orbital buffer until it is shiny once again. (This process is removing the orange peel look)
11. Once smooth and shiny, apply a coat of polish and a coat of wax per the bottle instructions.
12. Finished.

I did mine pretty much the same way 4.5 years ago. If you use a quality clear coat they hold up great. I didnt mask off my reverse light though.bs 20.JPG bs 26.jpeg

I need to run over mine again with the rubbing compound. I still have that orange peel look and it kinda bugs me.

Great write up. I plan to do this exact same thing following your post.

My exact steps were like this.

- Remove tail lights.

- Mask off everything but the lense, also mask off the reverse light if you don't want it tinted.

- Wet sand the lights with 1500 grit sandpaper until a uniform flat finish is achieved, removing all gloss from the light.

- Dry them really well.

- Lay on a light coat of VHT, using a 50% overlap.

- Allow to dry about 10 minutes between coats.

- Apply additional coats of VHT in the same manner until the desired dark level of the tint is reached. For me I went with 3 coats.

- Once that is done let the VHT cure for a few hours, overnight if you can.

- Gently wet sand the lights again using 1500 grit until all of the orange peel is removed. Keep wiping the light off as you work with a clean microfibre towel, if you still see little shiny spots then that is your orange peel and you need to keep sanding. If it is flat and smooth with no shiny spots then you are ready to move on to the next step.

- Again, dry the lights really well.

- Apply a light coat of clear coat to the lights. I repeat, light coat.

- Allow to dry about 10 minutes between coats.

- Apply a medium coat of clear to the lights.

- Wait 10 minutes....

- Apply a 3rd heavy coat to the lights.

- I used Dupli color perfect match clear coat. I found it was easy to work with and ha held up very well over the years, but im sure there is better out there. If you have access to a compressor and a spray gun then all VHT is, is over reduced black paint.

- Allow the clear coat to cure for at least a few hours.

- Repeat wet sanding step again, checking for shiny spots as you go, take your time, be gentle until they are all gone.

- Dry them off really well again.

- I then hit them with mequiars ultimate compound, then mequiars ultimate polish, then mequiars nextgen 2.0 wax.

- Unmask them, Done deal, enjoy.

I might have to strip mine down to the lens again, and redo the VHT. that's where the peel came in.

Doesn't that make your brake lights / tail lights dim for the cars behind you? i would think it would, especially in daylight. I'd rather have my brake lights be seen so I don't get hit.

If you upgrade your bulbs to LED’s then the VHT might make your lights just the right brightness. :)

I only went 3 coats of VHT so they wouldn't be too dark for people behind me, or for LEO. If you go 5-6 coats, then expect them to be dark, and possibly not seen

My tails are tinted and you can see these lights perfectly
