Lately my side steps have been squeaking a lot and I figured they just came loose. Well today I went to retighten them and noticed the bolt was pushing through the body. So I took off the drivers side steps and noticed these nice surprises...




Anyone know how much this would cost to fix and possibly reinforce? Definitely like it better without the steps but also need the steps for my short fat ass

Got a mig welder? The only thing that I can think of for reinforcement would require getting a piece of flat stock back there some how.

Nope no welder. Its actually going to an offroad shop Monday to make sure all the bolts are still tight and set the bils at a new height so I'll hope to see if he could do it there.

All jokes aside, I've seen this happen on a few of the body mounted steps. Some of the step manufacturers actually include reinforcement plates with them now to prevent this from happening.

Yes they do.
Mine came with the nutserts already installed from the factory. (I thought WOOHOO one step saved!)
NOPE
I had to drill those little ******** out (this was a MONUMENTAL PAIN IN THE ASS) to be able to install the backing plates and nutserts that came from AMP.
Now I'm glad I did!

There is a forum member who was very knowledgeable on frame repairs(jimmy68???)not sure. I would think stop-drill it and weld it, then plate it for reinforcement.

everyone uses teh saem holes but AMP and a few others have backing brackets to help add strength to the point of contact. some use an L bracket that goes behind the metal, others use an L bracket AND a plate that goes over the metal. Have even seen soem weld plates, with correspinding holes, to the rockers and use L shaped bracvket behind rockers. Nature of the beast, thin metal to reduce weight and increase milage. Be glad you don;t have an aluminum FOrd bed, check out the hjoles that things gets.

Okay cool. So this looks like it'll be an expensive easy fix. Just need to get some power boards now. Does that reinforcement plate come with the kit or sold separate

Comes with everything you'll need. You can install it yourself with basic hand tools.

This!! A right angle drill is the **** for this area. Also you'll probably still have to repair the tears a bit to use even the backing plates that AMP provides.

Agreed, I started the install, stopped, ordered a right angle drill, and then finished the next weekend! I was thinking you it might be worth using the amp plates as a template and adding a front plate out of sheet metal that is a little wider and might help move some of the stress away from the damaged part.
