Put the deposit down today. I may not be able to drop the truck off for 3 weeks or so.

I have an 18 mega cab 2500, 6.4 hemi, 6 speed trans, 3.73 gears, 4wd, stock 20in wheels and tires. With this setup i am thinking i should regear to 4.56. Would like to hear others opinions. Thanks

After reading all of this thread, I think you made a good choice. Enjoy your revised truck. Thanks for the update.

I went with the 4.56 ratio with stock 18" tires. I am very pleased with how well it performs when pulling & while empty. If I were going to pull more often & it wasn't used as a daily driver, I wouldn't hesitate to go for the 4.88's. I only pull heavy 15-20 times a year.

Thanks, good to hear from someone that has done it. I have a company truck so mine only gets adout 3500 miles a year. Half of it is usually pulling heavy and the rest is family hauler.

I agree. Don't think a lot of these people understand gears and what the numbers mean. The difference between 4.10 and 4.56 is not much at all. You are only talking about a 200 rpm difference at 70 mph. When people ask me for my opinion on what gears to go to I always suggest going at least "two steps apart". What I mean is that in general gear choices are in the ranges of 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88 and 3.73 to 4.10 is only 1 step apart, 4.10 to 4.56 is only 1 step apart, etc.... In my experience it's pretty hard to tell the difference between gears that are only 1 step apart. Spent years working in the automotive test field running tests on vehicles and had fleets of vehicles that were basically the same with the exception of the different factory gears that were usually always "1 step" apart. If you didn't look at the engine rpm's at certain speeds it was hard to tell them apart. Prior to that experience I daily drove a Chevy truck that came stock with 3.73's and then I added 33" tires. When the opportunity came around I regeard the axles to 4.10 (1 step). Remember how excited I was going to the shop to pick it up because of how big of a difference it would be.......I was very disappointed driving it home as I really couldn't tell any difference.

Great post, thank you! Spot on and something I've said in the past to folks who have the 3.73s like me and want to go to 4.10s. It's simply not worth the cost for the minimal gain. I'm not sure how the new 8 speed trucks pull with the 3.73s, however I've always felt that 4.10s should be the standard gear and 4.44s optional.

My truck pulls my 6k lb tt very well, but it could use a lower gear.

If you are only putting those amount of miles on it I would be very tempted to go to the 4.88's. You probably would be turning about 2,200 rpm's at 65 mph. MPG drop will be a very small. I have lost 1/4 to 1/2 mpg since I have done the switch. Not bad at all considering how much better it pulls itself & the 5th wheel down the road.

Bad idea if you have larger than stock tires.

what are you towing and what gears do you have now. If you have 4:10’s and stock tires and not hauling over 10k stick with what you have.

Amazing how much better it pulls itself down the road isn't it? With the gearing they have in the tranny I think 4.10's should be standard & 4.56 the option.

I’m not that impressed yet. Yes it’s better but nothing amazing. I know that 4:56 would be a waste with anything over stock tire size. I’m on 34’s and it’s not night and day with 4:88.

I really only notice starting from a dead stop and how it don’t like going over 75. Midrange I haven’t noticed.

but like I said towing will be the truth teller.
I’m hoping for better performance taking off and being able to hold 4th at 60-65 and 5th 65-70. And pull hills in 3rd at a bit lower rpm instead of second at 5000rpm.

Thanks for the update on your regearing, it's good information. I will be very interested to hear how you like it when you pull..

Wheel size is not important. What is your tire size? If 33’s 4:56 will be about the same as my 34’s with 4:88
