I have had the normal fan clutch issues and I thought I had it sorted out for several years through a modified wire bracket, zip ties, and light use of the go-pedal. Then, one day recently, a perfect storm made the fan grab the bracket, explode, and take out the radiator.
I got a new fan, clutch, and radiator from Rock Auto. I made a pigtail extender and did away with the steel bracket all together. I zip tied the wires to the radiator and out the bottom of the shroud - as far away from the fan as possible. On my first test drive into town, the fan still swacked the wires a little and even made a swipe mark on the face of the radiator. This fan seems to be even more flexible than my old one.
I bought the truck already tuned and it has a big tune. It will do 40psi according to the gauge (I tried once to see), but I keep it below 10 because I'm getting tired of fixing crap. (New jasper engine with head studs, giant turbo, boost fooler, straight pipe - it's been modified).
I'm 1/2 suspecting that the tune may also have had the fan clutch altered to grab harder to keep the engine cooler? Someone used it for hauling in the past. As long as I short-shift, go light on the fun pedal, and don't go over 70 on the interstate, I don't get into trouble. But this has become rediculous.
Is there a source for a stronger fan out there? Are we stuck with aftermarket junk?
