The only way an 03 had a 5.9 is if someone did an engine swap! And I don't know why they would swap the Hemi for the 5.9!

The 2003 was the first model year with the Hemi engine and the 5.9 was no longer available!

Mine is an 03 and has the Hemi engine, mine was some of the first 03's arriving at the dealers.

My 03 5.7L which I bought new is also a early build and I have never seen a 5.9L gasser in a 03, but with that said the 2003 service manual has the 5.9L gas engine listed as one of the engines available. If you have some documentation stating otherwise let's see it.

That's mainly because it was the same service manual as the 2002 which had the 5.9. Dodge started producing the 5.7 Hemi in June of 2002 and that was the replacement for the 5.9 engine and was first introduced in the 2003's.

One advantage this guy would have with the 2005 would be that is the first year they put the MDS in the Rams which really helps with fuel mileage.

Harold, look at RockAuto web site and you will clearly see the 5.9L gas engine listed for the 2003 model 1500 Ram. My Service manual is a 2003, not a 2002 and it lists the engine. The OP stated he was looking at a 03 with a 5.9L gasser. I don't know what it takes, but it appears to me you are mistaken.

FWIW , a guy at work has an 03, factory with a 5.9L gas. I'm thinking it must have been introduced half way through the model year but I could be wrong.

The 2003's did not have a 5.9 in them. The last year for the 5.9 was the 2002 model year. If it is a 2003 then it would either have the 4.7 small V8 or the 5.7 Hemi.

Here are the pictures of the engine and the emissions decal that is under the hood of my father-in-laws truck. I know that the emissions decal is fuzzy, if I had noticed that when I took the picture I would have tried for a better picture, but you can see that it is a 03 model year and it is in fact a 5.9, not a 4.7 or hemi. This is a factory motor, so there must have been an option for the 5.9 in the 03 model year, at least the early builds as this truck show a 8-02 build date on the door pillar.

Just wanted to show picture proof that they did put 5.9's in the 03 truck.

WG

I added the door sticker picture which has the vin, if someone really wants to prove the point and look that up.

Wow! I've never seen an 03 with a 5.9, that one is a very rare one! When I went to the dealer he told me you couldn't order a Ram with the 5.9 because the Hemi engine was replacing the 360. I told him that was fine because I wanted the Hemi engine.

I use to have a 70 Hemi Cuda in my younger years (could kick myself in the ass for selling that one) but, when I heard Dodge was coming back with the Hemi engine, I had to have one!
