Why does my truck start like this?

It's a 2010 big horn with the 5.7 hemi and has 53,000 miles. Was gonna change spark plugs next time I change the oil. I bought the truck with 30,000 miles and have not changed them yet so they are probably the originals.

I would start with the plugs. Factory change intervals are 30k. Also, was this the first startup of the day, or does this start like this all the time? I ask because mine will start like this in the morning, but then start fine the rest of the time. From what I read the batteries are weak in these from the factory, and people who have replaced them notice a big improvement. Maybe get the battery tested or swap it out? I may do it one of these days...

It only does this when the engine is cold. Didnt think of the battery but that is 4 or 5 years old now too. Thank you

Are you talking about that ticking sound before it turns over?

No I think you're hearing me click the remote start on the key fob lol. I was more concerned with the sputtering before coming alive. Gonna change the plugs this weekend then check the battery if that doesn't solve it.

I've noticed my 2014 will hesitate for a second now and then...haven't owned it in cold weather yet but I suspect it'll get worse when it gets chilly out. It'll crank and then pause for a half second and then fire, but only on the first start of the day. After that, it's fine.

I think this thread was an omen for me. After reading it, the very next start of my RAM was rough and essentially the same as your vid. First time for me to experience that. I actually have spark plugs in the cab waiting to put in (haven't had the time to do it), so I hope it solves the situation for both of us. If not, I will go ahead with a new battery as well. Plugs are due anyway. I just past 30,000 miles.

Hoping for the best.

Might have something to do with the key. My wife's durango starter would stay starting they replaced the tpim(I think that's what it's called) hopefully it's not that!

Ive noticed on mine it starts 'differently' as well, just based on sound. Sometimes if lights right up, other times its like a 'slow burn' start.

I haven't figured it out either, the "slow burn" (basically sounds soft) starts are after its warm as well.

Having never changed plugs on anything that didnt have a distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wires etc., does this job typically require anything besides spark plugs? Do you also replace the coil packs and the wires that connect the plugs to the packs? Am I making any sense? Lol
