I never have. Granted I've never run anything bigger than a 33. The truck, to me, handles better in the snow with the larger tires than the stock garbage

I am too lazy now to switch mine back to my 17s, so I will be rocking 295/60/20s Trail Grapplers this winter

I have stock tires and i hear it's crap. Cant afford new shoes, but i want to get something more aggressive, larger, but keep the original chrome clad rims.

if you use 4 wheel drive your stock tires will do fine in the snow.

I've not had any issues with my Wrangler HPs on my stock open diff 2wd in the snow.

If you have the money for winter tires, you certainly won't be let down with them.

I never have changed tires for winter. This will be the first winter for my Cooper STT's.

When I lived in the snow belt in western Pennsylvania and only had rear wheel drive cars/trucks I kept true snow tires, some with studs mounted on a set of rims. Only takes 20 minutes twice a year to change them.

If I was living in an area that receives big amounts of snow per winter, and even if I had 4wd, I would definitely have snow tires on spare rims.

There is absolutely no comparison between true snow tires and every other tire for snow driving even if you had 6 wheel drive!!! I don care who you are!!!:D:D

The rubber compound in snow tires is made to stay flexible in low temps to provide better footprint.

Any combination tire is a sacrifice when driving in the snow.

I Have had michelin M/S tires on my last 5 trucks and even they are a trade off but they do extremely well in the snow. But with 4wd they work well.

Just my opinion

Regards
Don

I'm currently looking to do this...I think I'm going with a HBS 2.0 level and Cooper Discoverer AT3's in 275/65R20. Not finalized yet, but I do know that the stock Goodyears are junk...

OP, back to the original question, I've never switched out but as long as you drive intelligently considering the weather, as long as you have tread, you should be ok.

That Depends

The answer is it depends on where you live and whether you have 4x4 or not.

I'm right on the edge of the bad snow line in Northern VA--two years ago we got 10 ft in 24hours. I won't buy anything that isn't 4x4 or AWD, just because of the need to avoid the assorted road terrorists, idiots and snow-stupid drivers that seem to collect around DC.

My last Dodge got hit two years in a row in December. First time a guy in a Mustang spun out in frost in front of me, then hit me and shoved a little RAV-4 into me even after I dodged around him in 4x4 and got safely to the shoulder. Second time guy in an Altima locked them up on snow and slammed into my rear axle at 40+mph. Neither of those cars fared very well. The Nissan was a total--I had to change a tire and drove it home.

I drove that vehicle after repairs for another 12 months before trading in on my RAM. :Stupid Me:

Snow requires good traction but is normally not a problem for all seasons, however in large amounts driven on by lots of vehicles and not plowed in time or at all creates The Zamboni Ice effect where the only saving grace is ice Tires or studs. I have tried different set-ups and so far love the Duratracs in all conditions year round with 50 PSI Max in winter for Ice traction. If I was in a more consistantly Severe Winter area I would get the #16 Studs added and would be able to handle ice roads.

Here in the USA tires with studs are only aloud to be installed by certain date and must be off by certain date this prevents damage to road surface.

Most Provinces (states) up here are not allowed which are the Eastern Ones that Have Salt the Roads all winter and it clears away the Ice except for on the rare occasion it gets below -20. Here in Alberta (Or West of Kenora in "No Rust / Original Exhaust Forever Country") don't think its a problem to have for year round and I haven't seen a stud Claw mark in the pavement for years like back in the 70's when they were needed. But Yeah reason I don't got them is I am fine 98% of the Time, But Good Point, Don, have seen studs let go and take out Windshields too.!

OP, Didn't mean to thread Jack but I recommend either 2 sets of Tires or a Good Snowflake year round Quiet Tire like the Duratrac.

I swear by BFG At's they seem to do everything pretty well and as long as you rotate them you'll get lots and lots of miles out of them. I had 125k on a set on a grand cherokee.

I swap mine to a smaller rim, narrower tire in the winter. We get pounded with snow (and salt) so no matter what you run gets trashed.

So I use 2 sets to take care of the my nicer rims and handle better in the ice and snow
