I'd really like to be able to get the spare down if need it. 2014 Indiana truck. Has not been touched at least in the year and a half I've had it. Maybe never. Any chance the mechanism still works? Tips on getting it down appreciated. I'm thinking PB Blaster and a prayer. And beer. Anything else?

I took the one on my old truck down once under about as bad conditions as you can imagine. Many years after I carried a full size spare in the bed. I do the same with my new to me truck. Can be done, I know how, just don't want to and since it isn't a truck that works much at all, I can get away with it!

Finally crawled under the truck today, PB Blaster in hand. All I could get to was the weird looking springy thingy that goes through center of rim. Hosed it down with PBB, but not sure if that's going to get it.

Oh and get this. The spare looks to be the brand new OEM with nubbies and all. Obviously never been down. Crap. Got a feeling this is going to be a battle.

I appreciate the link to the special socket, but don't have one of those or 36" of extensions. Does that leave me stuck with using the stuff under the seat or having to shell out for special tools I may never need again?

Take it to the carwash and hose the living $h!t out of the mechanism with the high pressure soap setting, and while it's wet start working it back and forth with the tools under the seat,it should eventually work loose if it's stuck.

If you can't get it to move or drop, put something under the tire to support it and cut the center piece that holds the tire up.
Then go to car-part.com and get a good one and extend that cable and grease the entire cable.

If you do get yours down, wind it the whole way down and grease everything.

Try removing the air from the tire. Entire wheel/tire should be able to move around a bit with a rubber mallet do some persuasion. Get everything loose then start on the mechanism to lower the spare. I keep wanting to get mine down to do some preventative maintenance. Maybe today...

BEST SOLUTION: (based upon many years of personal experience on this very matter):… Take it to the Tire Store and tell them to inspect your spare.

(and consider buying a new one if they condemn it because it’s old)

I hate those P/U truck spare-tire winches and the cheap tools they supply to operate them. I bought a cheap, Horrible-Fright, long 3/8” extension and use the 3/8” square-end to engage the winch…and drive it with a battery-powered drill or impact-driver. (I think high-end pickups like we buy these days should have an OEM electric spare-winch, standard, operated by the F.O.B. Not only should it lower the spare…it should also extend it aft beyond the rear bumper on a tray. I shouldn’t have posted that. Now I can’t patent the idea.)

Another tip: A floor-jack from HF is also a good thing to carry in the bed or tool-box.

Second tip: The factory, circa-1920’s Ford screw-jack is a good trot-line weight.

Third tip: Carry a cheap, blue, HF tarp to lay on the ground for when you ever need to do this excersize. A $1 rain-poncho from WM is also a good thing….because when you need to change the tire….it WILL be raining.

Yup, they probably deal with frozen and neglected spares all the time.

If you want to do it yourself, let air out of tire, use a 2x4 across the tires diameter, just off center, and a jack to jack the tire up tight to the frame. You will be able to wiggle the tire carrier out of the centre hole. Use the jack to lower the freed tire. Then clean and lube mechanism and cable. I use silicone spray lube followed by dry graphite. Grease attracts dirt, salt etc.

Like my previous message, the only way to drop your spear is to get the square socket with a 3/8 " in.36" long extension ( about $ 10.00 at Tools or more ). The factory one under the seat is JUNK! and will only strip the square end when trying to turn it. If cable is frozen from rust etc. The square socket is strong enough start the lowering process without stripping the factory square cable nut.
Good Luck

This is what I may end up doing. The 3/8 female end in the cone that takes the 3/8 rod appears to be rounded to the extent that a 3/8 male end is not doing the job. Any suggestions dealing with the rounded female end at the end of the cone? Thanks for your time.

i run 35s so i’m not sure if it’s going to fit i hear that they do but im not gonna chance being stuck in a mud hole with a flat. i built my tire carrier so that wouldn’t be a problem. my tire carrier is removable and it carries my little diesel heater and the fuel for it on one side and the tire on the other

the two gates are in a piece of pipe that is mounted on spacers and a piece that goes across the truck and is attached by longer bolts it’s homemade and it works

i guess it depends on what kind of truck you’re running if you’re using it for camping/hunting etc a big tire carrier bumper could be the answer. if you are a pavement pounder you probably won’t want that

I get Fluid Film or Krown done I drop the tire first then it all gets sprayed!
So far lucky not frozen from all the Salt on the road !
Try and spray PB Blaster on it any way you can !
The stud holes on the rim give you a few angles
