Is it the wife or the truck? My wife drives our 2020 Rebel and she had issues this morning. This is all from the wife so details are a little vague. No prior indication of any issue. 72k miles. Went to load groceries up at Wally World. Electronics would light up, but truck would not turn over or make any other signs of life. Engine light flashed. Did this repeatedly. Called my trusted mechanic. Towed to their shop. Says its the battery. I guess I'll get a new battery and see if thats it. Don't know what all she was doing with the truck, but she sent a video shortly after telling me it was having issues of a hissing noise coming from the front. Its pretty hot today so maybe some AC related hissing, but that part at least has me scratching the old melon.

I've seen some weird stuff when there's an issue with the battery. I've talked myself away from battery a couple of times only to return to it later after other troubleshooting done and it was the cause.

Hissing? I agree with @RamDiver , if you could post the video it would certainly help

Battery is cheap to try and at that age you need one anyways. One thing I have noticed on my ‘22 is that sometimes a light press on the brake pedal is not sufficient to start it. Press harder on the brake it starts right up. Sometimes it feels like I am pressing unnaturally hard vs starting other vehicles.

Again, if you live in a hot region, chances are that your battery is toast.

I would still load-test the battery before replacement and you may as well have the alternator tested at the same time.

Most auto parts stores will test an alternator and load-test the battery at no cost.

Or, you could buy a toaster-style battery load tester for $22 and test it yourself. This tester is a useful tool to keep at home.

The digital-style testers that most stores will use are prone to false positives. The toaster-style load tester results are much more reliable and always accurate.

100% a battery issue... A load test will verify but that's what it is

My 2017 RAM 1500 had the same battery problem about 2-3 months ago. Was a little slow starting most cold mornings. Then one day when I stopped at the grocery store and it would not start. Just a loud click when I turned the key, but nothing. Electronics would play, and IIRC the engine (?) light went on.

Called AAA for a jump and they confirmed that this was the original battery from when it was made. 7 years is a good run for a battery I suppose in New England.

They offered to replace it then and there but I thanked them and made a beeline to my local shop (who has always good to me). Splurged on the best battery for the ole gal.

Here in Texas, 3 1/2 year old Ecodiesel with 62000 miles and after sitting 2 weeks after a knee
surgery the battery was dead. Tried charging it but it was no use. AAA towed it to the dealer and it was confirmed the battery was no good. I have never experienced this before. I bought a 2016
used with 30000 miles and ran that truck for 3 years and 120000 miles and never replaced the battery. I guess OEM batteries are just not as good as they used to be, just like me.

I used to have a 99 suburban 2500 with a 454, super clean kept it an excellent running order and even fresh paint. The wife asked me if she could take my suburban grocery shopping, I said sure. When she returned from grocery shopping, I went out to go run some errands and noticed the rear passenger door was completely caved in. I said to the wife what the heck happened! She said what? I showed her the cave in rear passenger door and her response was oh it’s just a truck . She’s now the ex-wife moral of the story don’t let your wife drive your truck.

Hah...wife drives a 2014 Cherokee...some of the dash controls are on a raised pad on the left side of the steering wheel...whenever she reports some kind of problem, I always check the pad, because she will 99% of the time somehow activate a button and mess up the display...I cannot get her to learn how to not do that...

2 separate 5th gen rams I owned including my current 2019 everything working fine no slow turn over no electrical indications no problems using truck during the day out of no where won’t start.
Changed battery on both when they wouldn’t start and solved problem both times.
Each time truck was about 4 yrs old with original battery.
Happened on my 4th gen a few yrs back when I had that.

This current hemi Laramie had about 22 k miles on it a little over 4 years in service date.
Did purchase truck used off lease

Keep in mind that if it's the factory battery, it should be an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery. They last 3-7 years or sometimes more. I have a 2019 with 130,000 miles and it still has the factory AGM battery. It's possible that the battery did go bad or there could be other issues. I'd make sure to have it thoroughly diagnosed. Make sure the alternator is putting out the correct voltage at all RPM's.

Similar situation has occurred to several members on this forum. Truck drives fine to somewhere then varying range of time goes by and then either nothing or just flashing lights on the dash. Replace battery and problems go away. I wouldn't say the wife did anything to exacerbate the problem.

Current production batteries seem to barely make it through their warranty period (IF they make it). Best to get a battery from someplace with a decent warranty trade in policy for those times it dies before its time is up. With all the electronics in new vehicles, they tend to get touchy if the voltage is not what they want. I remember batteries that made it 10+ years regularly, now it's almost unheard of.

My ram will not let my wife eject any cd’s. But if I hit the button it does. And she can be in the passenger side. And the truck will do this. I told her it’s the trucks way of telling her she’s the side chick. Lmao. Now recently my 81yr old mothers Mustang. (Not joking). Had some battery (I thought) issues. Kept acting dead , sometimes would jump it and it would start . Sometimes not. It’s a 00 has like 80-83000 miles. Original battery cables. So last yr I was working she calls , won’t start. Se Tx. So HOT. 81. So I go get her , throw the load tester. Pictured above. Battery bad ,grab a new one put in starts right up. Had also had a couple charging issues before that. Anyway I get a call in feb 24. Go over ,getting lights on dash. And security light. Ford thing. Now bat is good so I’m diagnosing in a parking lot. Hoping it’s not the security ring on ignition switch. (Ford). Then I notice when I turn key all lights dim like a bad battery. Which I know is good. Now I’m going at all the battery connections . Low & behold the factory negative clamp , where it’s crimped. Is not fully crimped from 00. So I spray it with electromotive cleaner & crimp the end. You know with the proper crimping Vise Grip. Not one issue since. The clamp is the 5/16-8mm bolt style steel. Not lead. So this makes my wonder if some of the battery & charging issues I’ve seen on here may have a similar problem. At least with some of em. I’m mean my mom’s mustang went 22-23 yrs with the cable that way. And there was little to no corrosion on the terminals. And I’d imagine anytime the cables were messed with or battery removed . Then it would start back up. A place to look if you’re having battery issues. Sorry for the novel.

A few years back, my wife and I were in Cades Cove, in the Great Smokey Mountains. We had been riding around all day, just killing time. We took a picnic lunch with us and stopped at the picnic area just before you enter the Cove, had our picnic, loaded everything in the truck, and prepared to leave. Put the key in the switch and turned it to start and...nothin'. Dash lights, radio, head lights, all worked, but would not crank. Couple of different guys brought their boosters over, would not turn over. Finally, a guy that was camping came by on a bicycle, said he had a diesel truck in the campground and would be right back. Hooked the truck to the diesel and the truck started right up. So, yeah, I agree, new battery time.
