And the bed is probably cleaner than when you started

Spring steel is elastic and springy hence the name. Over many, many cycles it will fatigue and sag but occasionally over load is not that bad unless you break it

I'd be curious to know exactly how much weight that was. As I said on my first post a short and low speed trip wouldn't bother me, which is what you did. Wouldn't have wanted to a do a 70 mile trip like that obviously. And as you found out it's not like the truck broke in half or anything. Doing that every once in awhile is not an issue, and leaving the load on overnight is not an issue. It's only when you start doing stuff like that every day for months or years when it starts causing issues with trucks. I grew up in a farming community and had family involved in the construction business. Loading trucks like this was pretty common. You need to run a couple miles down the road...sure, go ahead and load everything on it.

I once had a 3/4 ton Ford (early 70’s) that had helper springs. I had them put enough on to flatten out the springs…it was at this time that I realized I had my drop hitch in and the key was in my garage to remove it. The bottom of the drop hitch was about 1-1/2” above level ground. That was a slow 7 miles home. Only hit it twice though!

According to my experienced calibrated eyeball that was probably about a ton and a half if it got where it was going it’s all good. People worry to much it’s your truck use it how you feel

1/2 a yard of heavy topsoil bottomed my ram right out. Short trip for me, but there’s no way I’d have driven 70 miles with that 1/2 yard in there. It was pretty sketchy.

That’s probably a little too much lol
Hell no, its not even up on top rail yet, Funny thing , back in the day, I would use my old 77 Datsun long bed 1/4 ton, it would handle more load then the Ram 1/2 ton.
It had the typical weight reduction body mods ( rust hole) so that helped with payload, great old truck, should have kept it, I had fixed cab mounts so it would not fall off in rough trails.

@Airmousam Your good, no issues. I wouldn’t drive that load beyond the few miles you did though!
Overloaded is relative ya know?

that a old ford , so no one gives a damn. BTW back in the day Dad would load 50 bush of good wheat in a short box 53 ford 1/2ton, when they made a good truck, Pay load ,? but good wheat is 63-68lbs/ bus.

Don't know about the new models, but my 2004 Quad Cab 2500 Ram just brought home 1,800# of pavers, 30 miles of 70mph interstate and 25 miles of 55mph back roads . . .been doing this for years ( some loads exceeding 2,500#) with no issues, ever. Watch your tire rating is the only concern.

Leaves not coils I’m sure makes a difference too. I’m sure anyone who has ever worked loading a truck or hauling stuff has over loaded a truck

Good point my 06 Dakota that I frequently overloaded had leaf springs. I'd rather have leaves. I want a truck to do stuff not cruise like a Cadillac.

I bought my pw for what I wanted to do. Then I started building the stuff I wanted but can’t afford. Every one is different I wouldn’t buy a pw for a heavy duty work truck. But I wouldn’t buy a one ton mega cab daully for a camping/ trail machine either. Buy what you can afford build what you can’t.

My idea of camping is out in the bush away from other people. That’s why I bought a pw. If I wanted to pull a large trailer I would get a bigger truck

getting a yard + of topsoil, 5 pounds of air in the air bags, handled fine  I asked them to try to keep as much soil as they could off the tailgate! which they did even though the bucket was not one of the small ones out there they load pick up trucks with

Found this on the internet as you can see dirt is heavy. A cubic yard is about 3 good wheel barrows. The average guy can wheel a heaped wheel barrow of topsoil, gravel not so much.
