does anyone know of the cheapest way to get some more power out of the 5.9L for hauling a couple of horses? one more question, would having a faulty crankshaft position sensor cause the truck not to start all the time, but when it does it runs fine?

Yes a faulty ckp could cause that symptom.
On the power thing your going to have to be more specific. How much power are you looking for? What is cheap? What trans, gears and tires do you have?

For your year truck a SCT turner is the best bang for your buck. Full tune up and fix the plenum gasket.

i have 285/70r17 terra grappler tires. Its a 2002 dodge ram 1500 so the tranny and gears are stock. I am pulling a horse trailer with two horses and just wanted a little more power

You likely have 3.55 gears and with those tires that is part of your problem.
I would do as merc suggested then think about 4.10s but just as a suggestion I would not be towing that much weight on a regular basis with a 9.25 rearend
