Well I figured I would make a decision go and get the Pennzoil ultra platinum 5W 20, but no one in Savannah carries 5W 20. A few places have it in 5W 30 they say they will order it for me but I have to buy 12 quarts at a time but whenever we do a change we need 7 quarts.

Of course I can order some off of Amazon as well.

Whatever happened to just being able to walk into an parts store or Walmart and just buy the oil I want? Frustrating!

They do sell the platinum all over the place just not the ultra platinum in 5W 20.

After reading so many threads about oil I was going to move away from AmsOil just to save a few bucks because I do change it every 10 K anyway. The ultra platinum sounded like the way to go but now I can't remember why maybe I will just get the platinum.

One things for sure I've never heard any hemi tic. Hope to keep it that way without wasting money on 25 k oil that I change every 10k.

If anyone is running Pennzoil platinum 5W 20 and they like it, by all means please tell me about it

Thanks.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm really leaning towards running a 0w30 oil. I'm also possible thinking pennzoil yellow bottle since I change my oil prematurly and have spent many hours reading about pyb. As you I can't find ultra around here neither. Running Amsoil now and no tick but it's kinda a pain to get have to order it. I'm on the fence with platinum.

Ultra is gas to liquid oil, and then is further processed. It is known as a super super clean oil, it also has hyper cleaning ability and very significant and what blows all of the oil guys away is the NOACK, the best low evap rates you can get OTC. Ultra may be the best choice for our Hemi's, but platinum is pretty close as well. If I was running 10k+ oil changes I'd look for Ultra, 0w20 will work just as good. less then 8 bucks shipped to your door free is well worth it.

i run pennzoil platinum. have for years in a few cars. no complaints on it. if the ultra is that hard to find locally i would just use the regular platinum. i would rather be able to just go to the store and get the oil i need when i need it and not have to worry about ordering it.

Ultra is gas to liquid oil

The new platinum is this too. At least the one I buy is.

I read a while back the Pennzoil was slowly phasing out platinum and would only be selling the Ultra eventually. I wish it would happen sooner rather than later. I also cannot find Pennzoil Ultra anywhere locally.

Burla glad you chimed in! Since I have my
Mds turned off I should be able to run a 30 weight oil or is the 20 weights protect just as good nowadays ? My understanding on manufactures pushing the 20w is more for credit from the government. I sometimes push my hemi pretty hard. Also pennzoil platinum don't have a lot of moly in it how do you guys feel about that?

I feel the Penzoils have enough Moly. If your engine develops Hemi tick, then you try more extreme things to avoid putting in new lifters. I prefer 30 weights much more the 20 weights, even more then most oil guys, specifically because I bought a new truck and had a bad tick that was fixed with oil. My belief is that Hemi's have challenges when it comes to lubrication. Many people don't believe this, but to each his own. The trade magazines are the best place to get oil info, this is what they say on the subject.

Many guys run 5w30 with no problems even with mds, but some guys have thrown a code. I never heard of it actually breaking anything, so I believe the risk is low. Most of the UOA's have Hemi's having higher wear numbers then average. So maybe just having a Hemi (because of it's design) in operation is an extreme situation? In other words, it would benefit from 5w30. Most of the UOA's where of 5w20, but to really find out someone would have to run 5w20 and then 5w30 and do a UOA on each on an engine with good mileage on the counter. I would gladly do this but the problem is I have a young engine and the truck doesn't get driven enough. Someone running 15k miles a year would be a great choice to do this test. In theory 5w30 is better, but it is just my theory.

I have a 4.7, but I switched to Pennzoil 5w30 & the engine sounds better, it had a lash adjuster tick, & that has gone. Hoping it stays that way.

I totally believe sometimes it is this simple. Sometimes not, but for guys like me and you, a different oil fixed an annoying problem.

I think Penzoil Yellow is the best OTC conventional oil that I've looked at, but I don't think I would choose it over Penzoil synthetics. Read the penzoil website, honestly I am puzzled why the price of Ultra is so low, for a couple more bucks you get an oil that is really engineered to a high degree. nuff said by me, peace B

Picking up 14 quarts of AmsOil Sig and two filters tomorrow. That will last me 18 mths or so. Still going to change every 10k. I have near 19k on the truck, look forward to UOA results. Initially changed my factor oil at 2k. Ran more conventional until 4K, then Penns Ultra until 9k then more Ultra until 13K. Then AmsOil Signature in the engine and a AmsOil gear oil in the rear and front axels.

I realize if I really wanted Ultra Platinum I could just oder it, but if its not cheaper or easier to get then AmsOil I might as well keep running AmsOil. Whats in there now still looks pretty good.

I read supposedly independent reviews on AmsOil Sig. Try to look at UOA specs but to be honest I have no idea really if Sig is really better than the best Group-III oils at this time.

I get the impression Ams Oil could lesson the additives and we would not know because we do not know what group signature really is. Big trust factor I guess.

Sure there is some reason why the will not tell us that works to AmsOil favor. But a lot of people I know that spend gobs of money on lifting their trucks and other mods definitely run Ams Oil, especially in the front and rear ends.

Next will be the tranny at 25-30k. Not sure what to put in there. Might be best to put mopar back in there. I am sure I will post a thread asking what everyone else runs.

I have the 6 speed and have heard Dodge does not make the best trannys, but I have no complaints. I love the way my truck runs. Like to turn the MDS off in town and set the gear limit to 4th.

I never do the run around in tow mode, do not like seeing the little yellow light on.

What about adding Cerma to Pennzoil Ultra or PYB???

I know enough about it that it is a very low risk additive, none of the usual bad actors in the formula. I would always opt for a synthetic oil over a conventional one in a vehicle I planned on owning for a long time, Ultra is such a good formula, it is hard to recommend anything over that. I will do a UOA after a year of using Cerma and it will really tell a story, because I will have 2 UOA's to set a base line. Until I get the data, I wont be recommending it except for the one member who had bad results from his Redline oil change. Anyone considering Cerma should reach out to other sources. In my research I have found no credible reasons not to try it, only debbie downers who bash everything. But the guy I know has been running it since 2007 in 4 cars, and swears by it. If anyone finds any credible negative paper on Cerma or Cermax, post it in synthetic thread.

My local Wal-Mart doesn't sell the Ultra Platinum, but I found one close that does...at just $28 per 5 qts, versus $25 for the regular Platinum, I think I'm going Ultra next time around with a 5W30.

I run Platinum 5W-20 and a Mobil One filter with no issues, I have even mixed Mobil One oil with Platinum because our engine use 7 quarts. I usually buy whatever is on sale and has a good reputation. I have some tick on start-up like almost everyone does, but that has been discussed at length everywhere.

Coming up on 6k and going to change to 5w-20 pennzoil ultra with a Mobil one, Mopar or K&N filter. I'll see what my thoughts will be after change.

This is interesting.. I never participate in oil threads but there is some good info here and the topic has stayed with pennzoil. I Use Pennzoil conventional and change it every 3k miles (call me old fashion). I developed "HEMI Tick" around 10k miles (i have 22k now). I am religious with oil changes at 3k and I dont want to spend more money on oil just to change it later as I believe changing synthetics at 3k is a waste on a DD like my truck. However i do want to fix the tick. Do you guys have any suggestions on what i should do? If Platinum is only a few bucks more then i guess changing it every 3k is worth it to fix the tick. But wanted to get some feedback before I spend the money on my next oil change.

Also, how serious is Hemi tick? I have got the general idea on here that its fine to just ignore it as trucks with over 150k have it with no issues. but one of the above posts scares me in regards to the replacing lifters comment. Can it in fact cause failure or is it just a "feature"?
