I noticed we all use 3 ton floor jacks. My truck has a GVWR of 6900#. Should it be of any concern that we are probably over the weight limit for the jacks and jack stands (if anyone is using the 3 ton stands)?
Researched this yesterday due to the same concern.

Research curb weight vs gross weight and see what you come up with.

Curb weight on my crew cab is 52XX. That’s allegedly with a full tank of fuel.

3 tons is 6k lbs.

To me, that gives us roughly 800lbs of room. Plus, with the jack in place, I believe we’re okay.

GVWR is different than GVW and different than curb weight.

But see what you think.

I welcome engineers’ opinions on this.

I have the 1.5 aluminum from Harbor Freight and love it. For my 1500 there is no problem lifting a wheel but for my Cummins I must use a 3 ton.

I’ve been using a Harbor Frieght Pittsburg 3 ton low profile quick pump floor jack. It low enough to lift my Mazda and strong enough and goes high enough to lift my RAM. However I do have a 12k two post lift and a 10k 4 post lift at my shop that I utilize.

Keep in mind, unless your jack is centered under the truck lifting all 4 wheels off the ground at the same time, you probably have even more wiggle room.

If the truck has about a 70% front weight bias, and weighs 6900lbs, your jack needs to be capable of lifting 4830lbs, if lifting the front. Less in the back.

If the weight bias is less, even more wiggle room.

This thing isn't a "Snap On copy"....It's made in the same damn factory. It's the same thing.

At 1/4 of the price, of course.

Read the history of this, as there is a court case surrounding it...And Snap On lost. Snap-On imports the pieces and assembles it and boxes it in the USA. Harbor Freight imports it as a finished item. They are LITERALLY made in the same factory.

And if you'll notice, the packaging is generally much nicer than most Harbor Freight products.

Front cross member and put a jack stand on frame. Close to the rear diff and put jack stand on rear end by shock mount and mount jack stands on eather side once lifted.

I knew I was missing something in this equitation. My research essentially came to the same conclusion.

At the risk of getting off in the weeds, how are these lifts and stands fail tested? A static load limit can be very different from a shock load limit.

For my ram with 20” wheels I couldn’t get it lifted up with the HF 1.5 ton aluminum jack. (Maybe i was trying to jack both sides up at once-in the middle) Sold it off to get the 3 ton low-profile jack which offered more lifting height.

Thanks for your service Marine!

1 wheel at a time is all its good for, if lifting both front or rear I use a 3t.

I have a 2 1/2 also in garage if I need to get both wheels up, instead of putting under the center hub to lift both sides

The jack itself is awesome. Couldnt recommend it higher, it came from Costco.
