I recently got an amazing deal on a 2016 Ram 1500 quad cab V6 and it's not bad as a daily driver but I want more power out of this truck. So don't think to low of me when I ask but can I do a straight engine swap to the hemi or will I have to do trans as well. I'm aware it's not an easy task but I do want to do a build series on it and document it so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why swap a stock motor. Your going to spend more to swap than trade. Swap in a 426 or 440 stroker if you are going to do it otherwise not worth the money imho.

I agree and I was actually thinking of doing a built 392 my question is more about will I have to do the trans swap too or can I build the one I have a mate it to the V8?

If you want to go ahead with the engine swap and put a 5.7 HEMI in place of the 3.6 Pentastar you are going to need to swap the transmission as well. Your best bet would be to locate a wrecked donor truck.

The 845RE, which is the transmission behind the 3.6 in your truck, has a torque rating of 331 lb-ft. of torque. The torque rating is fine for the 3.6 because it can only make a maximum of 270 lb-ft. or torque but the 5.7 HEMI makes 395HP and 410 lb-ft. of torque. That much torque on the 845RE will hurt this trans and it will not last very long even as a daily driver. The trans the comes behind the 5.7 HEMI in the trucks is the 8HP70 which has a torque rating of 516 lb-ft. of torque.

So, for the basics of the swap you will need the PCM and will need to have it programmed with your VIN/SKIM info. You will also need the engine wiring harness, motor, transmission, torque converter, exhaust y-pipe, radiator, etc.

This swapping business aint like the old days. For that matter its not like the ole days to even work on these newer vehicles. Wrenching back in the day was kinda fun. Now its a expensive, nightmare.

I like the SC idea of the V6......but you still got that weak trans...... like doing the same with the 5.7 & the rfe trans.

I love the 3.6, supercharge it and enjoy it. That engine is on the top 3 for me, it’s that good.

The centrifugal type super Chargers like the Ripp, and Pro Charger are supposedly easier on automatic transmissions because they make their power higher in the rev range.

In the vid, they made 440 hp. You don't have to go that high. If you want more power, but are concerned with your tranny, dial it back to 400, and you'll be making more RWHP than most 5.7s.

Is V6 insurance any less than the V8 trucks?

+1 for the RIPP supercharger. If I cared about more power, that would be a great option that would probably net out cheaper moneywise than the 5.7 swap with all the associated headaches.

I would normally agree with everyone as far as the supercharger goes but I can get a complete truck (written off) for about $3500 and I happen to be good friends with a certified Chrysler mechanic so from what I have calculated I can do it all for under 5 grand

Like said earlier in the thread, I'm not sure it's just a matter of swapping the engines and transmissions. I'm not sure the driveshafts mate up between the two setups, then you've got differences in computers, wiring connectors, different exhaust systems, engine mounts, etc.. etc..

For a 2016 daily driver, putting ~$5K into a truck to swap it from (a perfectly good) pentastar to a hemi powertrain is not something I would even consider. VIN# is not going to match, resale will be nill, etc.

If you were starting from a recked/totaled truck as a project I get that.

Not a chance. You’re going to be in well over 6k. As someone else said it’s not just swapping the trans and engine.

I asked them this specific question on their youtube channel and they deflected twice. The Ripp is pushing wayyyy to much power for our stock trans. I think the Sprintek is the better option.

I would agree with everyone else. I would just SC and call it a day. If this were to be a project vehicle then that is totally different. The estimated cost you are projecting with is going to be more than $5000. I would say closer to 7000 or 8000. My first mustang was a V6 5spd. I eventually went from stock to CAI and exhaust and made 208rwhp. At that time it was a 2006 with the 4.0 engine. Later dual exhaust was added and had a retune done I was at 215. My last modification was a Procharger and was running 10PSI and made 315. I will never say just get a V8 because of what I went thru with my V6 mustang. Just remember over estimate your budget and plan for unexpected things.

I vote for swapping the trans regardless of the engine. The 8hp70 is stout and can be had at junkyards for $500-600

I don’t think it just swaps in though, that’s the issue.

The spintex can safely be put in the stock trans and still put more power than a stock 5.7

It bolts in along with the TCM. Using alfaobd to program the vehicle to update the trans. Process the trans learn function etc. Shouldn't be any reason it couldn't be done.

No need to mess with any other drivetrain components? I’ll have to keep this in mind once I SC my RAM
