My 2016 had the removable filter cover, but no cabin filter installed. I purchased the first cabin filter from the dealership.
But to install the filter I still had to cut out some plastic to get it to fit correctly

K&n makes a washable cabin air filter for our trucks as well. Be sure to get the cleaner and recharge kit also.I have had mine for more than 5 years.

Just cut mine out with a razor blade. Few good passes with pressure, it was easy.

Installed my air filter with a dryer sheet on it, cut the airflow down a little bit, but it's a great air freshener lol

I used a new utility knife. Didn't take long.

I have a 2016 that was built in 2015. No door... After suffering from cramps contorting my 6' 2" body on the floor pan and having my abdomen compressed by the door sill and only getting a small amount cut I drove to my local mechanic and had it done...

Don't forget to vacuum the box and get the debris left from cutting hole. I have changed mine out and it does get dirty. I noticed that there is a clean area on the filter indicating that not all of the filter surface is used.

I used a modeling saw from a local model shop. It has very fine teeth that cut when you pull it toward you so that the sawdust does not fall down onto the fan. It worked very well. Took me a few minutes to cut the opening out.

My 2018's filter was dirty after 6-months, easy to change, and I bought my filter at AAPs.

My 2016 2500 didn’t have a door so I used a razor knife. Draw slow and steady without too much pressure and make several passes. 15 minutes and then side stretches to get back to vertical in the spine!

So, I ordered the air filter kit yesterday and looks like it will be here on the 30th. I should be commenting on the install next weekend. Additionally, my 6" BDS Coil-Over kit finally came in this week and my wheels and tires should be here on the 27th so it may be a very busy weekend!
Did you go with the 3" or 5" rear setup?

how did you cut the hole out? (tools methods type of bourbon needed etc etc)
the videos i fine, tend to gloss over this important part of the installation.

I heated up a boxcutter blade with a propane torch, then let it melt through the plastic and into the space I wanted to expose. Then I just pushed the hot blade through the plastic following the contoured outline until I had made it all the way around!

My 2016 2500 Crew cab, had a door for cabin filter. I just went to replace the cabin filter and there wasn’t a filter in it. Now it has one!

Anyone happen to know if my 2018 Express Crew Cab has the filter door in it or not? It's in the shop getting some upgrades done or else I'd check it myself today.

Box cutter and cigarette lighter. Worked good, not hard except for the contortions you will need to do. I took the blower motor off when I finished to get any bits out of it.

Whatever you do don’t use a Sheetrock knife and mini torch. Takes much longer than it needs to.

I agree with the contortion comments. However, the install was easier than I thought as I just followed the inside of the lip but went straight across at the bottom. I didn't even heat up the blade but am sure it would have taken less time if I had. Scribing the intial line is key and after I went over the same line a few times, the knife just went through and "viola" new hole for my cabin air filter. Gave it a good filing to ensure it was smooth and the filter went it like it was supposed to.

Just did this on my 2009 as I have the box out to replace the heater core and evaporator. You can see how dirty the evaporator is after 195,000 miles. I've seen worse. I got a K&N filter and the door off of Amazon. I recommend this update to anyone with one of these trucks as your A/C will suffer from the evaporator getting clogged up. I just used a box cutter with a new blade and it was easy. Of course a little more difficult if you're doing it in the truck but doesn't look too bad.

BTW, I work in the automotive industry and when cabin air filters first came out, the car companies started putting them in lots of vehicles. Then they stopped doing it so much because people would never change them. /then they'd bring their cars in for service for issues with the climate control. I bet most people still don't change them.
