FWIW, I have been running 5w30 or 0w30 in my 5.7 with MDS for close to 50k now. MDS works flawlessly and all my UOAs show low wear for a Hemi. Several other guys on here have had the same experience with a 30wt oil. Don't be afraid of 5w30 in your 5.7 with MDS.

5w20 was specified for the 5.7 in the 1500s and cars to increase the CAFE numbers, not because of MDS.

Wish I could find the article I read this in, but it essentially said that Ford dropped 5w30 in favor of 5w20 in their modular V8s back in the late 90s because it gave the motors .5% better fuel economy number. In other parts of the world they stayed with 5w30. Here in the US the 5.4 3V is notorious for cam phaser/timing chain guide failures. Where 5w30 is being used they don't have nearly as many cam phaser/chain guide failures. I think it was Europe they were talking about but I'm positive.

Point is all of the big 3 had to do whatever they could to squeeze out as much fuel economy out of their vehicles as possible to appease the EPA. Think about it from their standpoint: drop a weight in oil to get .5% increase in fuel economy for hundreds of thousands of vehicles and the motors still mostly make it past the warranty period. .5% is nothing for the consumer but its HUGE for CAFE numbers.

The tradeoff of .5% fuel economy in exchange for a ridiculous amount of wear on your engine is not worth it. Plus, the only time a thin oil saves on fuel is at light engine loads, while idling, and at high RPM (has to be light load). Basically, all the situations that you won't be in 99% of the time. I mean, who's sitting still, idling their engine, or who is traveling at highway speeds in low gear?

I would say in the not so far future 1500's will be electric only, you want gas or diesel you will need a 2500. You might want to take one of these funny money checks we are all getting and put an old 90's ford under a tarp in the yard, if you have room. I would except I am in fire country, so I'm trying to figure some long term plan.

Free cookie if anyone can find a uoa or voa of this oil, Blue Diamond poa/ester oil. This could possibly help solve the moly question if it was low or no moly. Weird the 5w40 is ten dollars more, which makes me wonder if the 15w40 is as they say, 100% 4/5 or if they mix some 3 in there to keep cost down. They say no, so I guess we have to believe them.

Don't you dare take a bite unless you post a voa or uoa.

I'd hate to see Chrysler making the HEMI a GDI engine, or GDI/MPI, or calling some turbo-charged four or 6 bangers a HEMI. They lack the expertise to do it. A 1500 electric truck? Thanks, but no, thanks. Really, I don't want it. In fact, I don't want any electric vehicle, period! I like oil and gas too much.

Speaking of retired!! I just did a few years ago ordered me a New Hellcat always wanted. What oil and filter would run after break in?

@Burla will probably recommend RP 20-820. I don't really like RP products, so I would recommend Purolator BOSS PBL24651. It's built like a tank and flows like a river, and the media is made of Polyester. As far as oil, I would say Red Line Oil 5W-40. If you're like me and just want to baby it and never run it hard, then Red Line 0W-40.

Whats everyones opinion on gear lube for these trucks other than amsoil and redline? M1 75w90 looks mediocre but the 75w140 looks good. Has some pao and good pour points. Delvac 1 75w90 looks good for the front. Im thinking d1 front and m1 rear

I'd recommend what the book says until you are out of warranty, maybe the srt filter of that goes along with book. If you end up with hemi tick and then denied warranty work, then lets change it. So PUP 0w40, or as a second choice a 0w40 with mercedes spec 229.5 and porsche spec with dexos and fca's spec for the hellcat whatever that is.
