So it happened
.
Have been getting 28 gallons into the fuel tank running 15 or 20 miles past empty. Today I was towing heavy and didn't want to get off the highway to fill up during 5 o'clock traffic. So I pushed it a little farther. I knew I wasn't getting 10 mpg probably more like 7 or 8. Ran out of fuel a few miles from where I was going to get off and filll up. Had a half gallon in a can in the back and that got me to the nearest station. So much for a 32 gallon plus reserve tank. This is what went back in.

It's not 32 + a reserve, It's "approximately 32 gallons" total. Most specs have them listed as 31 gallon tanks. Still slightly off but too many variables when you get that low.
In reality you probably had about 1 gallon left in the tank sloshing around at best. That's not much to keep everything pulling fuel reliably
And of course the mpg gauge is always more then generous. Mine is pretty consistently ~2 mpg higher then hand calculated.

31 is right I guess I assumed there was a reserve. Since its advertised as a 31 and not a 26 or 28.. The last ram I had you could get 35, 36 gallons in. I guess I thought this one had a similar size fuel tank in it seeing how the fuel mileage isn't any better.

my 31 gallon tank usually takes 26ish if i run it to 1/8 remaining or so. never understood why they advertise on thing and it's not really true. my 09 1500 was the same way, i could never fill it to the advertised capacity. it's kinda like the bag of chips you buy that's only half full!

These trucks really should have a 35-36 gallon tank, especially the gas 2500's. The range is pretty pitiful with a 31 gallon tank.

Yeah, especially for the gas trucks. I generally have enough range with my 31 gallon tank due to my fuel mileage, but I wouldn't if I was getting 2-3 mpg less.

As expensive as the fuel pump is why would you risk damaging it by pushing to the max and running out of fuel???

This. Also, the pump strains (potential damage) when it is low...so why even allow it to get that low?

I try to fill whenever I get to 1/2 with the theory that head pressure will help the pump work less and try to never run it really low. I don't know if it really helps the pump much but at least I'm not fearing being stranded on the side of the road. After reading 29 into a 32 that was very nearly empty makes me wonder about where my 26 actually is when I sputter to a stop so anyone with a 26 chime in if you have had an experience.

There's a reason why certified aircraft list fuel capacity as, "28 gallons total, 26.5 gallons usable" or some such. Total for the weight....Usable so you don't get stupid.

Was pulling my camper last fall ( wife driving) east on interstate 40 near Fenner Ca, where the only ******* gas station was charging 5.99 gal., buck or more too much. Figured i get to Needles Ca No problem on 1/4 tank. Man was she pissed. When I got there, Range was at about 1 mile left, fuel light was on for a long time, I had her Tailgating two semi's. Tank took about 29 gallons. So probably had a few more miles left. Not worth the worry, should have filled up sooner. Had the same issue between El Paso and Van Horn Tx at 3AM.

I call that "playing the gas game" and it sure makes my wife mad! Now I start looking for a place to stop around a 1/4 tank. I'm never towing anything heavy that uses a lot of fuel.

Have some family members that like to play the gas game when they borrow the truck. They wonder why I say no the next time they ask when I need to dump a jerry can in to make it to the gas station after they drop it off.

Exactly, but they seem to think because they're broke and I'm not that it's ok to inconvenience me and spend my money. Isn't family the best.

It was a mistake. I hear all over the board how the fuel guage is inaccurate. I paid for a 30 gallon tank not a 24. I heard a long time ago fuel tanks had an 8 percent.reserve.That would have been 3.5 gallons of fuel I still had in the tank. I guess I was wrong. If rams fuel pump burns up at 29 and half gallons of fuel in a 31 gallon tank that's on them it's under warranty

I posted this so someone else wouldn't make the same mistake. I came from a truck with a 34 gallon tank that would hold 36 maybe 37 maybe more I can't say cause I never ran it it out of. fuel. I put 2 fuel pumps in it in 223k if I baby this one maybe I will only need 1.
