So this weekend, I towed 6,600# with my new truck. Since I had never towed with this truck before, I thought I would share my experience. The little V6 impressed the heck out of me. Here are the details and observations;

Truck: '19 Classic Quad Cab 1500, 3.6 Pentastar V6, 4WD w/ 3.55
Tow Rating: 7,450#
load: 6,600# (car on trailer)
Terrain: Rolling Hills (some fairly steep) but no mountains (or even anything that looks like one)

Observations
- V6 was a trooper. Pulled hard and never sounded or felt under powered.
- 8 speed Tranny was flawless. always in the right gear and didn't hunt around much. I did use Tow/Haul the entire trip.
- On the handling side the truck squatted more than I would have expected but my load was a little forward of center (on purpose) but other than that it took everything in stride.
- MPG was an average of 13.8 (hand calculated) at an average 70 MPH.

Overall, I would have liked the increased torque of the Hemi, but the 305 HP of the V-6 were up to the challenge.
Yes the Pentastar tows well when needed but if I towed regularly, I would have opted for the 5.7

Edit: I did monitor the temps while driving. Coolant and Oil Temps fluctuated between 205 and 212 and the Tranny Temp fluctuated between 178 and 185 with an occasional peak at 196 on the long uphill segments. All within normal, non towing, parameters.

That's a good report Grumpy. The most weight I've towed is about 4000 so its good to hear how the 3.6 does near max. The operating temps tell me the driveline is not overly stressed and its the same with my truck. I agree on towing a lot the Hemi is a better choice but for occasional the 3.6 is a trooper and the mpg you got is stellar and almost the same as my old 5.9 Cummins gets with that load. I guess you have the electric assist (forget what its called) but I'm curious about your mpg not towing. My average is 22-23 mixed city/hwy with a 25 high and 21 low.

Actually, no electric assist as mine is a classic. My mileage is all over the place. I only have 3500 miles on the odometer so I am withholding judgment until its broken in some more. I get decent milage (22 +/-) when all warmed up outside but horrible (16-17 +/-) when cold outside.

I've noticed that ambient temp MPG drop in my last 3-4 newer vehicles. Ram included. Anything cooler than ~58F or so and I get about 10% less MPG than warm temps. A lot of factors there, but the basics is colder air has more O2 molecules per volume of air, so more fuel must be injected to maintain ideal air/fuel ratio.

Great write-up on the towing!

My brother has a 2019 Classic outfitted the same as yours and he specifically got the 3.55s for his ~6000 boat towing. He hasn't towed yet with his.

Interesting. I’ve seen some noticeable swings in MPG driving the same route to work that have had me scratching my head. Wondered if it was the gas i happened to fill up with. I’ll have to start paying attention to outside temperature.
