Youd think. Went to four different shops and only until I went to the dealer did my problem get fixed. Oh well. It’s done and over with. On to the next project!

I FINALLY think I figured out what causes the wobble. Now. Can anybody tell me what this part is?! Next post will be a video so you can see the whole thing.

The steering gear is on the other side... I’m pretty sure.

The steering gear is mounted to the front most cross member and spans the width of the cross member. You’ll see the outer and inner tie rods attached to it. I’ve come across a one or two cracked just like that before.

The pictures and video are taken from the rear looking forward. So the moving piece is on the passenger side. The part that is cracked looks like a box. Approx 9x5 at about 1.5 inches thick. Then the steering column comes down and connects to the other side of this box.

That’s part of the steering gear. It’s all one assembly.

Yeah. You’re right. So I went to the dealership tonight to confirm what it was. And they quoted me at 2500$ for parts and labor.

They’re not cheap, that’s for sure. The labour is only a couple hours at most, but the parts are pricey.

For sure. The part alone was 1900. Quoted me three to six hours for labor.

The death wobble you speak of only happens on straight front axle trucks.
The IFS on the newer 1500s wont do the same thing for the same reasons.
I would think about shocks and tie rod ends for starters, I would also check the hub bearings for play. It just takes a small amount of play in a few things to get it to add up to a good amount of play in the hole steering system.

When will people look into the problem before diagnosing themselves properly?
I blame WebMd.

I have what I would call the “death wobble” with nothing wrong with my truck, except design! At highway speeds, if you just touch the steering wheel a tiny bit, the entire truck does a brief wobble/jerk I have never seen on any vehicle I have ever driven, and I’m and old guy! ;). The steering is just one thing on this truck I do not like at all.
