Is it possible to get the PSI reading on here via a reader? Or does the ecm just detect that it has pressure without a psi reading?

With a proper scan tool or even a half decent scan tool will display the oil pressure. The 2004 PCM receives the input from the oil pressure sending unit.

Even the cheap scan tools from the auto parts that they use to tell you why the check engine light is on will show oil pressure in the live data.

My buddies autel didnt, and my MXLink with car scanner didnt. I am going to hook up my snap on solus and see if I can pull it. We were able to see the status of the sender.

Curious if anyone has seen it on there scanner is it labeled as oil pressure? I just checked my snap on scanner also and couldnt find it on there. I can find damn near every other temperature, even battery temp haha Its driving me a little crazy.

Oil pressure is not real. Saw a video on this 2 days ago. It's part of the ECM programming. The oil pressure sending unit is actually just a switch. The ECM does some math with the RPM and adjusts voltage to the gauge accordingly. Dude reprogrammed it real time and changed the behavior to show his work. Blew me away. I've added a mechanical oil pressure gauge to my list of to do's.

Having trouble with oil pressure?
Mine was acting abnormal so I just got another sensor on Amazon for $33 and swapped it out. Worked like a charm

Not that I know of but I read that the gauge is essentially a dummy gauge so just wanted to check to see what the truck was at

Supposedly this is true on Ford trucks, but that does not mean it's true for all manufacturers.

In the case of Ram trucks there's evidence that this is not true. In this forum alone there have been a number of comments that changing the oil viscosity alone has changed the indicated oil pressure. If the claim was true every Ram owner would be recounting the same pressures at speed or idle at various temperatures.

Secondly, many of the diagnostic procedures in the service manuals will have a technician read the oil pressure on a diagnostic tool that is connected to the OBD port in the vehicle. This can only rely on a system that utilizes a direct reading sensor.

I am thinking it is after 04/05 where you can read the PSI. I tried my snap on scanner, my MXLINK, and my buddies autel. We could not pull oil pressure.

Many PID's on scan tools are inferred, and have gone through a labyrinth of electronics and data filtering/conversions to display what they do.
In service information/diagnostics, a mechanical oil pressure gauge is called for in order to log accurate readings.

When I compare live, fast, accurate oscilloscope readings to scanner readings, they are always different as well.

I’ve been adding mechanical oil pressure gauges to all of my personal vehicles for as long as I have driven.
It is the best way of getting an accurate measurement, and worth the investment.
This makes me feel good on long trips , glancing at the pressure gauge and knowing it’s true.
