I have a 2004.5 5.9 cummins 6spd manual with what I assume is the original turbo. It is starting to make some noise but still good power and no smoke. I would like to replace it before it goes out. I do a fair amount of towing so I would like something with exhaust brake. I know BD makes a kit to install the HE351 VGT from the first gen 6.7 cummins. I was thinking about this kit paired with the KC upgraded HE351 turbo that is essentially stock but built a little bit better and makes a bit more boost. Also thinking of the Diesel Logic 30% over injector set. I was told when I bought the truck last year with 15k less miles that they had just been changed but I want to add fuel if i am adding air. It has a 5in turbo back and does not smoke at all. Does anyone have experience running any of the mentioned parts? Also, what kind of tune would I need and where could I get it? Any help is appreciated thanks!
P.S. I installed Fass 100gpm and fuel bowl delete last month. Also plan to install EGT gauge when I do this.

What are your power goals? Is find the flow map for your current turbo and if it's within range of your desired hp stick the stock one back on. It's a slippery slope of wasted $$$ if you add turbo then Injectors and things don't match. Add 30% over injectors and more boost and volume and hope you have a good tranny to hold it all together. Ask me how I know this. :rotflmao:

Pop your intake off and grab your compressor wheel, there should be a slight bit of up and down side to side movement. Not crazy amounts. If there is any foreward backward movement I'd personally stop driving it immediately as its likely to spew your engine oil into the intake and possibly cause a runaway.

It has an nv5600 trans with dual disk clutch. I can't imagine any of this would be too much for it. There are some sled pull guys throwing 6-700hp to them and getting away with it. I am quite sure the turbo is not long for this earth. I am a preventative maintenance kind of guy as opposed to a repair guy. I would rather replace a turbo that may have 10-20k miles left on it than risk it trashing my engine. And I am pretty dead set on retro fitting to a VGT. I reeeeaaaallllyyy want that exhaust brake. I do a lot of towing, not often more than 10k but I do from time to time. Just wanted to get some thoughts from others that have done the upgrade and what it might look like adding some fuel too. As far as my power goals, I would like to add maybe 50-100hp. No more than that though. The engine has 265k on it and I would like it to last for at least another 50-100k miles before I have to rebuild it.

Diesel power source makes a vgt retro maybe look into them. I looked at it for my s480 to spool it faster but decided to jist go with a smaller primary. Trans is good. I assumed you had an auto. Just rebuilt my nv4500 it didn't like my upgrades, I should lave less clutch. Slip is better than break haha.

Happened to run into the owner of a local diesel shop this evening. He said for less than 100hp added power 30% inj would be too much for towing, would probably get hot easy. Without a much bigger turbo. So maybe 10 or 15s? Any recommendations? Also does anyone have a butterfly style exhaust brake? What is the performance difference between that and the vgt brake on a 6.7? I am well used to the braking power of the vgt from driving my uncles 2012 dodge. Just curious if there is significant difference between that and the butterfly? Can’t really afford to spend money that I don’t absolutely have to spend.

Side note: I have a 5in exhaust, the only 5in butterfly’s i see are really 4in and that sounds counter productive.
