Good evening i did head gaskets on my ram Yesterday due to leaking in to the cylinders truck ran fine though. But i was down about a liter of a/f a week and after pressure testing the system the white smoke out the tail pipe was a indicator.I had the heads sent out to the machine shop and they did valves and seats, pressure test. I got the heads back installed them and when i tried to start the truck i had a hard time starting it and when it finally did start it was missing on the back four cylinders.Using my scanner i could watch cylinders 5,6,7 and 8 dead miss.I am not sure what is going on i removed the valve covers and all pushrods are in place and ok there is no vacuum leaks. The only code in the system is p0300 random misfire but it does not run long.unless i bring the rpms up then cyl 5 stops missing but 6,7 and 8 continue to miss.I am out of ideas on what it could be other then putting the wrong head on the wrong side. But i do not know if that is possible. When i run the casting number of the head it is the number for the right head.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Just out of curiosity, did you happen to pull the lifters out of their bores and their respective trays while you had the top end torn down?

You said it was a dead miss on 5-6-7-8... Did you check to see if each of those cylinders were receiving ignition spark from their coils?

Do you have a noid light set you can use to connect to the injector connectors to make sure they are receiving a signal?

If you dont have a noid light set you can use a long screw driver and touch one end to the injector while its running and stick your ear against the other and listed to the injector to see if you can hear the "clicking" sound.

There are several things that need to be checked before we can determine what the issue at hand is.

i did not remove lifters,i did check the injectors there are firing,I did not check spark but after I had it started i did a cylinder leak down test and had the plugs out and they were dry so i assumed it was firing.
Just out of curiosity is it possible to mix the heads up and put it on the wrong side.

The cylinder heads and gaskets are not interchangeable from side to side. The gaskets also have to be installed the right way up.

Are the rocker shafts installed in the correct spots? The shafts are specific to the intake/exhaust, as are the push rods.

Have you done a compression test?

I did not do a compression test.I will do one first tomorrow morning. I did do a cylinder leak test on cylinder 6 and it held 100 psi. I am positive i got the gaskets in the right place they were marked right and left,I looked at the casting numbers on the head on the right side it was in the right spot. I took the valve covers off and all the rockers and pushrods are moving. I will do the compression test first thing on 8 and 6 5 and 7. I just find it weird that it is the back two cylinders on both sides.

They are marked with an “L” and “R” to indicate the left or right side and they are marked “TOP” to indicate which side goes up.

The R and L face up, if they were upside down the R and L would be backwards. As well if you did put them on backwards it would be leaking coolant.

Tighten the rocker shafts down slowly, adjusting the push rod fitment as you go. I never use the holder.

Ok will try that.Thanks

You can try using a mirror to make sure the push rod is sitting of the middle of the lifter, but it’s pretty hard to see. Pretty much have to do it by feel.
