This will probably turn into a bit of a rebuild thread.

I finally got around to working on this 2012 5.7 ram with 100k that I bought off a customer. It initially came in locked up it happened at a idle the guy didnt want to install a new engine so I bought it and its sat for months until now. I started tearing into it today finally and this is what I found... cylinder 6... dropped a valve havent come across this before on a hemi.. I am hoping I can save the cylinder wall with a light hone I already have a new cylinder head from another build that i did not use. If I cant save this engine thinking about finally doing a 6.4 Swap or building the engine idk.. I only paid $1000 for this truck plenty of room open to ideas!.

1,000 bucks for what I believe is the best year for ram 1500 with that rare 6 speed = score. Next thing you tell me it has 3.92's, then I would be officially jealous. I'm sure you will figure it out.

We will ALL happily help you spend your money ;)

For the $1K invested thus far.... IMPO... perfect time for a 6.4 swap, trans service and possible beefing up for new power (don't forget the @caulk04 trans cooler bypass upgrade if it's an 8spd).

Or go ******-deep and build a killer 5.7 with some forced induction!!!!!!!!!!!! (edit... why can't I say b_all_s!!!...lol).

This is like an open canvas and you now get to decide how to make it all turn out!

Good on ya, Brother & subscribed to this thread to see what comes of this.

Hope it didn't drop because of an overheated engine.
Unusual for a 4th gen to drop.
That was an issue with the 3rd gen.

I assume it broke the spring and they kept running it til it dropped. I dont really see any signs of a overheat thsu far oil is clean and coolant was full.

does anyone know if a 2017 ram 1500 transmission fit in a 2014
Actually both the 6 and 8 speed transmissions were available in both years. As mentioned if the transmission is the same # of gears the swap will be easy, if not a conversion is possible.

When it rains it pours my reliable 14 ram that i daily drive decided to collapse a lifter thats what it sounds like at least. It sat for a week while i was on vacation took it to work this morning pulled out into traffic and BOOOM that flashing engine light and tapping nice way to come back eh? Lol. I may just install a new engine at this point its the second time since ive owned it so not sure its just going to get parked for now il drive this one around for a while once i get it done.

This is the cylinder with the dropped valve It looks way worse then is on camera its for the most part smooth and on the surface just waiting on a new honing tool I did this in the truck by the way just dropped the pan and knocked out the piston.

Check with your local hi-po dodge shops, ones that do drop in pistons /rods etc, odds are they'll have some low milege stock pistons/rods laying around ,from doing a drop in set.

That sucks about the daily driver. I see a few used pistons on eBay for around $50.

Luckily I think I found a engine for it I just gotta go hear it run first It still sucks not a total suprise tho. I will keep the current engine that is in it for a rebuild at a later date i plan on running this truck til the wheels fall off I just got un lucky with the current engine all my other hemis went well over 200k.

Do you think it broke a valve spring or just worn down lifter/cam lobe and misfire code?
