Looking to trade my truck in for a 4x4. It's got the 4.7 in it. I'm currently in a 2013 express. Moving to country NEED 4x4. How well does the 4.7 perform. Don't need crazy speed. But is it a solid motor? Any input would be great

Don't think they still offer they 4.7 do they?

Either way, get the new penstar instead or a hemi. 4.7 is an old dog of a motor.

The 4.7 is still offered in certain 2013 models and is a great solid engine, i prefer it because it ALWAYS runs on all 8 of its cylinder's, i personally do not like the idea of the 5.7 running on half it's cylinders at times although it does give it better fuel mileage but if i was worried about fuel mileage in the first place i would not have bought a Ram Truck i would have bought a Ford Fusion. If you are going to be hauling heavy loads up hills the 5.7 will give you more power though which i am sure you already know ...... oh and as a side note: If it were me i would try to get 3.92 gears on a 4X4 if you will be hauling very heavy loads and not the 3.21 or 3.55 whether you get the 5.7 or the 4.7 engine, I have 3.55 gears and a 4.7 engine in my Ram and it pulls my trailer up and down hills just fine but my truck is just a 2 wheel drive with 17" wheels and i don't pull huge boats or large travel trailers for that a lot on here say get the 3.92 gears if available but for normal stuff i can vouch that 3.55 gears are plenty good enough but some will argue that point though but for me they work fine and dandy.

Why would you get the 4.7 over the penstar? Performance wise they are almost identical (even though the 3.6 is rated slightly lower in torque and also same hp the penstar is supposed to be quicker), yet the penstar gets MUCH better fuel economy. The 4.7 is only avaible with the old crappy 6 speed while the penstar gets the new zf 8 speed.

The eco mode on the hemi is not noticeable at all. GM has been doing it for years and continue to do so. Its a proven working concept. I never notice it on my hemi at all. Its only really noticeable if you have an aftermarket exhaust. Its also easily disabled by adding a tuner.

After looking on rams site, the 4.7 is no longer listed as an engine option in 2014, 2013 is the last year for that engine. Its only the 3.6, 5.7 and 3.0 with the 3.0 only being offered on SLT and up models.

I just don't think I can do a 6cyl. I have to have my truck sound like a truck. I don't need speed or heavy hauling. My current truck is lowered and will be destroyed where I'll be moving. So 4x4 and a plain jane style is what I'm after. It has the 3.55 gears. Won't be lifting maybe a leveling kit that'd be it. Will put some biggers tires but again nothing to big. Thinking rhino line bumpers and rockers. Lots of brush out there

I a 2012 4.7 4x4 with 2.5" level and 3" BL and 35" tires and isn't slow by any means still has plenty of power in my opinion.

That's what I'm thinking. Lol sometimes forums are a pain hahah. Love all the input though. But if deal works I think the 4.7 and gears will work. Just going to town and driving around on land. When it rains it gets very nasty out there.

That is exactly what I use mine for.

Well the deal didn't work out. I didn't wanna put anything down. So I keep mine for now. Got me thinking if I should go back to stick height and level the front with some stock wheels and bigger tires. Dunno to much going on in this crazy life at times. Hmmmm wonder why I'm moving to country lol get to the relaxed life
