2014 Folding mirror

My 2014 RAM drivers side mirror will not fold now. Passenger side is good. There is no motor noise and I checked for fuse failure, I did not open it up yet. Some of the posts show the new gear and new motor to install, can motor failure be the cause? Before I spend for a new motor, what can I check and what do I look for?

On my 2014, it was the little plastic gear that broke. Taking the mirror apart to replace it is a task, plenty of you tube videos. And increased chance of breakage. I just bought a mirror and painted it. Was easily painted and not difficult. You can also buy color matched by providing your vin number.

One obviously more expensive than the other. I think with buying and painting I was 187 dollars total plus my time.

PS. The mirror will make noise if the gear is broken, maybe even jump, but no noise if the problem is electrical, such as with a bad motor
