Are these good reliable trucks or is the trans to weak for real world towing over 8k toy hauler and does the 6.4L have a high failure rate with the MDS cam/lifter issues I've been reading about?
I'm not interested in spending a couple grand to get rid of the MDS just "in case" if it's really that big of a deal then I should avoid these?

Its like anything else was it maintained well? If so its a great truck if it was beat the hell and never had the trans fluid changed ECT ECT then yea it will have issues just like any ford or GM.

Looks to be super clean and had trans oil changed at 60k miles.
Oil changed at 5k miles regularly

If you can swing a 2019+, do it. The ZF 8 speed makes it a *much* better truck overall.

6.4L is a good engine. Cam failures are vastly overrepresented on line and have nothing to do with MDS (non-MDS lifters and MDS fail in equal numbers).

Sure, maintenance is a big thing but it's no guarantee you won't have problems. My truck was maintained at every recommended interval at the dealer since new and by 10 years and 120K miles the tranny failed twice and the engine once. I towed sparingly and didn't drive it hard at all. 95% of the miles were daily driving on highways.

This forum is filled with guys having lifter and cam issues. I'd love to tell another story but I don't know that I can say Rams are the most reliable trucks out there these days.

I have 2016 6.4l with 4:10 - the best combo

Check idle hours - HD truck owners tend to idle them a lot 1hr = 30 miles.

mtc is alos a key - oil changes, trans fluid

2500 6.4L Hemi 4.10's 'Off-Road'
Mine is a 2018 with 4.10's and 38,000 miles. No issues powertrain wise. Only issues have been the ABS module twice. I used to tow a 9000lb boat with it but only maybe 500 miles total.
M son also had a 2018 also with 4.10's. He drove it 90,000 miles in 2 years all over the country and towed an 8000lb TT for 10,000 of those miles and never had any issues.
