Hi All,

I'm a contractor and I have a 2016 Ram 1500 2wd 8' bed pickup and the Eco-diesel died at 270,000 miles. I'm looking at a Hemi 2024 1500 2wd 8' bed pickup but I'd like to keep my ARE contractor camper box for the new truck. Will it fit? I have heard different things from people. I really appreciate any input on this. The cap is probably over $5,000 to replace.

Thanks,
Keith

I should add that the shell has a door on the back and the tailgate is removed.

You might want to check if a 1500 with the 8' box is even available.
I think only HD trucks are available with the 8' bed but good news as those haven't undergone a full update to the Gen5 body. The cab and bed are still a Gen4 that have had cosmetic updates to the grill. The tailgate was updated to electric latches. The 8' bed on 1500 when it was available used the same beds as the HD trucks.
It's possible the cab/bed layout your looking at is available in the "Classic" version which is still a Gen4 like your EcoDiesel but it's probably only available in Tradesman trim (or possibly as a commercial build).

Thanks for the reply. Our current truck is a tradesman 1500 8' bed. The new one I was quoted on is the same thing but gas. Here's a couple of pictures of it. This is for my superintendent.
So are you saying that the bed is the same on HD trucks and not the 1500's or both?

The 2016 you had and the 2024 classic you are looking to get ..they are the exact same truck.

There is no 8 foot bed 1500 in the new body style.

The 2500 8 foot bed is the same bed still also...just some rework at the tailgate and taillights

So, yes...it will fit...it is literally the same truck

I work for U-Haul. U-Haul buys the 1500 tradesman single cab w/8’ box by the thousands. Literally, thousands each year. The 2024 Tradesman is the same DS body as the OP’s 2016. The camper should transfer. But, the OP should double check to make sure there hasn’t been some change I haven’t detected.

Yes the 6.4' and 8' beds are the same on the 1500 DS body trucks and even the latest model year ('24) HD trucks. I've attached the dimensions drawings for the 8' box, if you notice the file name notes DS/DJ which is the body codes (DJ is the HD trucks)

Those are fleet builds, like you stated ordered by the 100/1000 at a time. Hopefully the OP dealership can get him one, some dealerships don't to do single "fleet" purchases.
If it's a DS body, there won't be any changes of the body, maybe on the electrical side

True. The OP can always look to the used market. U-Haul sells them through a major auction house after +/- 20K miles or a year whichever hits first. They are all 2wd so if he needs a 4wd they won’t fit his needs.

The 4 door DS bodies are built there but unless something has been changed the 8' bed trucks are built in Mexico

Sorry for the late reply. I thought I pushed reply last week, but it didn't post. I really appreciate the help. I am going to ask the dealer to bring one in for the agreed price and then go measure the bed to double check. I'll report back.
Thanks again!

I was finally able to buy a new 1/2 ton with a long bed. It ended up being a v6 4x4 (we don't need four wheel drive). That is all that was left in inventory in the state for a long bed 1/2 ton so that's what we get.
The camper fit perfect. Thanks for all of the help!
