I looked at a '18 and a '19 when I bought mine. The '19 was $13K more money, and I absolutely did not like that dial shifter. Whose dumb idea was that anyway? It looks like you're driving a 1970s Grand Torino, or something like it. That was a big turn off for me. I've owned a six speed before in a '16 Power Wagon, and owned an eight speed in a different FCA vehicle. The eight speed feels better driving it, but not $13K better, and I never had a problem with my six speed before. So I saved myself $13K, and this truck is all I need.

That's exactly what I was sort of thinking, it has been so long since I've owned a vehicle with an automatic I'm not sure I'd even notice, and I sure do prefer the column shifter. The way it sounds though, the 19 and its 8 speed is a real upgrade.

That said 13k is a bunch of cash.

Sometimes, these new features do make us happy.
It depends on what you value.

Interesting discussion for someone like me who is currently looking at 18 and 19 Power Wagons. I think the 8 speed as others have said is a big improvement, though the dial does freak me out a little. One point though I feel like isn't getting mentioned many places is the protrusion of the center console where the dial shifter and diff controls are. Since there is no telescoping steering column when I set myself in the seat ( I'm 6'3) my right knee is VERY stupidly jammed into it. I've only seen one other dude mention this but it seems like a pretty big deal for anyone on the taller side.

Anyone have any thoughts have you guys gone and checked out the 2019s? or are we just talking about 8 vs 6 and dial vs column

I sat and drove one. I’m right at 6’4 and my knee does not touch anything. My wife went and drove a new 1500 and my god that back seat is amazing. Almost want to get one and her drive me around. She’s 5’2 so if I sit behind her it’s like a limo back there lolol

Serious question - is 6 or 8 speed better for off-road (eg, Rocks in Moab) or does it make much difference?

Yea, the fact that it has a lower first gear makes the crawl ratio even lower. Otherwise no, I cant really see much of a benefit to having a few more gears for slow moving offroad stuff.

And someone correct me if I'm wrong...but isn't the column shifter also electronic? May not feel like it but I believe it does the exact same thing as the dial shifter. Just looks different.

Wanted to give this a bump as I am finding a few leftover '18s with significant discounts vs the '19s. Then again, aren't we closing in on the 2020 release? At this point, would it be worth waiting out deals on 2019's? That will depend on if they are doing any of the rumored cab updates on the 2020s......

If you’re solely after saving money. There’s no way you’ll get better deals than on a leftover 18 if there are any left or a deal on a 19 classic. If you’re waking the latest greatest then 19 5th gen or wait for 2020. Both gens are awesome. It depends on what you’re after. Savings, latest greatest or little of both. If it’s the later then wait for 2020 and buy a 19 5th gen
