2020 V 6 using oil at 65K

Short post.. my 2020 v6 is coming up on 70 K. (bought it new) I started out with Royal P 5-20 and around 55K switched to 5W30 Amsoil Signature. I did not do alot of oil checks with dip stick as it was new. Now it looks like I cant get 5 K between changes without going to have to add a quart..whats up with that. no leaks and does not smoke. I was told alot of cars/trucks that are new use alot of oil. Is anyone else seeing this problem? I am doing a oil consumption test at dealer. I dont pull a trailer and drive without getting on it.

How long are you going between changes? 5000miles is generally considered the good OCI limit. The 10000mile factory OCI reccomendation is laughable at best and will just get you through warranty.

The oil filter housing is the most common leak. The timing cover leak is rarer, but not unheard of. Coked up piston rings and sludge from long OCIs and substandard oil will definitely burn your level down.

I dont have a leak at the filter housing. I had a Dorman one put on just because I had heard it was not if but when..no leaks there. Please any more suggestions. Cement driveway..no leaks

With no other indicators a quart in 5k miles is completely normal. So 5w30 amsoil is a very thin 5w30 as they went the direction of CAFE influences. If you want to stick with amsoil, try their eoro 0w30, way thicker. Or look at shelf 0w40's.

sounds odd but the in house fleet service for a company I worked for had issues with the Ford 4.8L burning Amsoil, they switched to a different brand and the problem subsided significantly. Oddly the 5.4L engines didn't have the same issue and this was spread across about 50 vehicles with varying mileage and drivers.

OP ...how much oil do you put in between changes? None? What is the oil leve after 5K miles? I would expect most vehicles to need quart, even two in 5k. And that wouldn't bother me.

IDT 5k interval is the issue. I've been doing 5k intervals on my vehicles (with dino oil) since the 80's. Never had one crap out or become an oil-burner and most I ran up over 200k miles (10k OCI on my VW TDI ...15+yrs).


If it's not leaking, what's the tailpipe look like, oily ...or nice and clean? Have you checked the PVC? Maybe try cleaning it.

I believe the spec from MA Mopar is a quart per thousand miles. I could be mistaken

The bad part is that where I live it is almost impossible to find a parking/lot gas station that has a level place to check it. what I did the last time I had the oil changed I came straight home and parked where I thought the most level place on my cement driveway and let set over night. The next morning, the level on the dip stick was right on the top full mark. I marked that place and check it there every few days. Also, I have a 2001 Ford Ranger I bought new with 339K miles. I drove it open road miles an hour each way to work on interstate and it uses about a 1/4 inch on the stick at 5K. Use Royal P 5W30 as long as I remember. Also, I have a 2005 Altima I bought new. I get the same oil results. I guess that is why I did not keep a close check on the Ram since I bought it new. The dealer service writer thinks I'm crazy for worrying about it so much. I guess they dont make them as good as they use to. Thanks for all the help.. I guess I will have to get use to changing oil at 5K with it a quart low Going to stick with Amsoil.

look at eot which is euro 0w30, as compared to amsoil 5w30ss. 12.3 operating viscosity versus 10.3, both 30 weights one is thin and one is thick. You knew enough to move up in weight, only problem is you didn't go thick enough. The thicker the oil less will be used, plus look at hths and noack numbers, eot is the real deal and is amsoil. EOT on paper one of the best oils we see around here, 5w30 amsoil mise well be a 20 weight.

That’s roughly what mine burns, I add 1/2 quart, 1/2 way between my 5k oci’s
