Toyota brass was leery of entering the full-size market back in the day, was promised they'd dominate the field and large volumes, none of which materialized. The full-sized has tremendously under-performed by Toyota's high-volume standards. The original Tundra wasn't quite full-size, didn't have the engine, didn't seem to understand full-size american buyers, and other blunders. The low volume is almost an embarrasment to Toyota. For years they didn't make many updates or improvements until recently. Pretty much the same with Nissan only worse.
That doesn't mean they're not good. They're up there in quality, size, hp of the big-3 now. Honestly I think they're both good trucks and having owned several Toyota smaller pickups, and worked on them, you get a lot of hidden 'beef' and premium design/build with Toyotas (and Nissans) which many owners never realize unless they service or take them apart and really look at how they're put together. If a guy were going to "own a truck for life" ...a Tundra would be a great choice. Course a 4th gen ram would be even better IMO!
Knowing Toyota was coming to town forced the big-3 to re-think & up their full-size tk game which gave us all a better product. Glad to hear Ram 4th gens are rated high. Like you say, it shows how improving a pickup pays off. That's kind of what Toyota has always done. Of course thats kind of embarrasing for the 5th gens...
