Hey guys,

recently discovered I had a rear seal leak. So instead of just doing the seals I did the outer bearings And seals also all the handbrake hardware, backing plates, rotors, etc. Crown gear looked fine to me but just for curiosity I checked the backlash in a few spots. I was getting anywhere from .019-.022. The specs I looked up went anywhere from .003-.010. I didn’t have a tool to readjust the carrier, plus I need my truck this weekend so I put it all back together.
Just wondering if it’s worth taking it back apart again in the near future to fix this backlash or do you think it’s fine. I haven’t had any issues with the rear diff except for the seal. And there is approximately 190,000 kms on the truck. Fluid change was done about 80k ago.

Did you check the backlash before the work ?? I would think that with almost double the clearance you probably need to readjust it and put it within specs. So as not to change the wear pattern on the face of the gears.

I only removed the side shafts. Never touched anything regards to the carrier or bearings. I don’t think that would change anything.

The backlash spec is for new gears when setting them up.

Spec is usually 5-8 thou, for brand new gears. Whenever you take a diff apart you always measure the backlash and put it back to what it was, unless you’ve replaced the gears.

As the gears wear the backlash will increase, but both gears wear together. With almost 200,000km on the rear end backlash of 20 isn’t out if the realm of possibilities. It still seems a little high to me, but if it’s not noisy or anything just leave it. If you tighten the backlash back up to new spec you’re going to change the gear pattern and there’s a good chance they’ll start making noise.

thanks for your input. What your saying makes sense. “If it’s not broke don’t fix it”
