Hi I have been pondering an exhaust change for several months and am considering doing a 3" Single In to 2.5" Out muffler, but changing the 2.5" out to 3" pipes. The truck is an 08 1500 Bighorn Hemi, with a K & N cold air intake too. It won't be mandrel bent either if I go to my regular exhaust shop. Do you think that would create any problems by going up to a 3"?

There was a guy at our dealership with the same truck as mine minus the intake, and he had original Flowmaster 40 3"single in and dual out with the 3" and noticed no issues with loss of performance, etc.

Thanks for any input guys.

I just got a series 40 on my 2011 and it was 3 in and 3 out. Why not just do that?

^ presumably because he wants dual exhaust tips?

Dual 3" out will cause a loss of bottom end. Why not do 3" in with dual 2.25 out and then run 3" tips?

If you do your geometry homework, you will see that the area of a 3" pipe is equal to the area of two 2.25" pipes. That's why mufflers are sized that way.

George is right, I had 2.25 on mine after the muffler when I had duals and kept the gasses moving.

Mine is SI/SO. What series 40 I went with I have no clue. I thought the guy at the shop said it was Thunder? But I do know this.....It is loud and I like it! I should add that it is a 4" Echo Tip.

After running two different varieties of Flowchokers on my Ram, I would recomeend a Magnaflow to anyone. We recently removed two flowmaster 40 series mufflers and external x pipe for a Magnaflow dual in/dual out on my brothers Dakota. The truck felt like it gained 40 ft/lbs of torque down low and has a much more mellow, smooth tone.

Well to each their own I guess. I like how mine sounds alot. I had Magnachokes on a couple of F150's and did not like the sound of them. OF course since I live in Missouri and we have state inspections, I have to have a muffler, otherwise I would run straight pipe with no muffler at all.

I kept my factory tail pipe after the muffler and it is 3" front to back.

Doesn't Flowmaster make a performance muffler? When I race my truck at Atco, the guys with the old skool muscle cars swear by them, and Cherry bombs

I think 3" duals would be too much especially with stock exhaust manifolds. And to me non mandrel bent pipe is a big no no
