Coming down 81 near Christianburg VA heard a ticking look down oil pressure ok looked back smoke trail then oil pressure falls to 20. I slow down put flashers on and eased to the next exit. Clattering running rough I cut it off. Looked under it and its coated with oil front to rear even on tailgate. Either it broke deep and has a hole or an oil seal or something blew and oil left quickly. Friend coming with a rollback to get it us home 2.5 hrs away. Gonna call my ram dealer in the AM to come get it. I cant believe it with just 33000 miles. Never without synthetic oil. Just dont know ☹️

Most recent oil change? Busted oil pan? I once had the guys at Jiffy Lube forget to apply wrist pressure to the oil filter, shot oil all over the place on the Honda CR-V (yes, a sad lady car!).

Change my own oil its about 2400 miles in. I looked under it not hole in pan. Looks most wet near the oil filter spot. I grabbed it with my hand feels tight no damage. Its weird. Got dark before I could really look more. Pan wet but the plug is there. Couldnt reach it due to my side steps.

This gave me flashbacks to a 92 Dodge Caravan I had. Once I broke 120,000 miles I would about every 10,000 miles until I sold it at 189,000 miles would build up some crazy pressure and blow all the oil out of the engine and over the windshield.

Usually happened when I was in Pa 3-6 hours from home. Once near State College in the middle of corn fields and that last time west of Harrisburg on the PA Turnpike at 75. Scared the **** out of me every time but that one I was passing in the fast lane and no where to go to the left. Had to cut accross three lanes of traffic and could barely see anything.

They never figured out the problem.

Sorry to hear. Hope they can take care of you quick in these parts-scarce times.
I know what it is to have an engine let go. It wasn't a Hemi, though.

Sounds like the oil pressure switch grenaded.
It's right near the filter base, look there.

At least your close to MMX if you need a build. Stay dry if it's raining as hard there as it is here (I'm on the other side of Roanoke) it not worth figuring out tonight.

Well I didnt blow. Got some help getting it up where I could get under it, a friend actually drove two hours to get us with a big gooseneck trailer... and my truck wouldnt fit it was to long. I did give us a chance to get the front end in the air to see what went on and I have never seen this before but something had hit the oil filter an knocked a hole it. Right on the front probably a rock. So we haul buggy to Walmart got a filter, wrench and oil... at this point we had nothing to lose. So we replaced the filter filled it with oil and it fired up oil pressure came up and lifters quieted down and the idle smoothed out. With no leaks I let it run a few minutes and decided to give it a try. Hit the highway easy for the first few mole then ramped it on up . It did fine , good oil pressure and oil temp with no sounds. Gonna cross my fingers but it made it 197 miles no issues. Now I am gonna change the oil this week hoping it stays good. With The sounds it made it had to lose some life but not much I can do but monitor it. I think because it never lost all oil pressure before I could safely get off the road and shut it down may have saved it. Thanks for the responses.

Bigskyroadglide, thats where I wheeled into when I jumped off the highway. If the service dept was still open I may not have been as delayed. I got lucky that it did this just before that exit!

Do you have a relocation kit on your truck for the oil filter? Reason I ask is because I can’t imagine anything getting to that filter in that ridiculous stock location. Can barely get to it to change the oil. Lol. Glad you got up and running and the motor seems ok.

I did talk with a friend that does alot of work on police car hemi’s and he said since i didnt loose all oil pressure and got it shut off quick it probably did no damage. It sure does sound fine as quiet a a Hemi gets. This AM when I cold cranked it not a tick chatter or anything. So I am not gonna worry and go about my buisness. LOL I may put a shield around the oil filter. Just a freak thing.

Yeah, no doubt, where they put that filter, I couldn’t ever imagine anything being able to reach that high and knock a hole in the oil filter but I guess stranger things have happened.

For a little peace of mind when you do the oil change soon, I'd suggest sending a sample to black stone labs for analysis. They will be able to tell if you have excess bearing material in the oil.

Sounds like you lucked out though!

Glad it didnt blow and did minimal damage but with only 33k on it and how expensive these are if this happened to me at such low miles i would trade it in to avoid future repairs lol .
