I have never owned a 4x4 so I have a question that has been nagging at me I am hoping someone can answer. Why is the front axle so much smaller than the rear? From what I can tell it is a 9.25 ring gear vs 11.5 for the rear. If such a large ring gear is needed for the rear, why not the front especially when you consider 4 low is 2.4 under driven, sending an incredible amount of torque, especially in 1st gear. Do the diesels use the same front axle as the gassers?

I do not know the exact reason, but every 4x4 is like that. The 3500 ram is the same way. I would think the majority of towing (and driving in general) is done in 2 wheel drive so the rear axle is used so much more thus the larger size.

I'm going to go way out on a limb here. Don't even know if this is true or even hold water but my guess it that there is much greater force on the rear axle when under heavy loads compared to the front axle. Much easier, less effort, to pull (front axle) than it is to push a heavy load (rear axle). This you can get away with a smaller axle. At least this makes sense in my mind.

Simplest answer ... Because it's cheaper. Generally the front diff doesn't see the extreme torque forces the rear does. If you're in 4 low crawling around and get a wheel stuck there's better and safer ways to get out of it besides more power! Lol Plus most people aren't out rock crawling with their daily driver so there's no need for a massive built front axle (hence the cheaper part)

Durability, the front axle will not be loaded it's entire life like the rear is.
