Hello,

I am lost when it comes to gears but I am looking to get the most out of my truck. I do not use it for towing at all, i have made just about every mod for performacance short of a supercharger. I have heard the changing the gears/gear ratio is a way to get it to really come alive for the lower the mid range rpms and off the line.

Is the stock 2.72?

I am hearing 2.92 or 4.10's. Does these work for the 4x4? ALso what do you I need to purchase to get the set up, both front and back need to be done because of the 4 wheel drive correct?

In a 2010, most 4x4's came with 3.55's stock, the upgrade was 3.92's
You'd better find out what you have first before making any changes.

Have you upgraded your Torque Converter yet?
It's a lot cheaper than a gear swap in a 4x4 and will get you off the line Fast
and bypass the majority of the factory torque management in the lower rpm range.

Edge 2800 stall really woke my 4x4 with 3.55's

What's a big Bertha 508? Is that a gun?

A higher stall converter is like revving up the engine a bit more before dumping the clutch. It'll get you off the line faster.

I'm going to preach 4.10 gears to everyone with a 545RFE, until you guys are sick of hearing it. They are that good. 4.10s make that 545 work like I'm sure the designers of the power train wanted it to work, before the bean counters and the EPA stepped in and ruined it with those horrible 3.55s. I haven't checked the actual numbers, but I can't see the 4.10s using any more gas, the way I drive my truck. The truck now shifts into the tallest gear at 55 mph, now. At 55 the rpms are the same as it was before the gear swap. At 65 mph, which is my interstate speed when I'm after good mpg, the engine is spinning 1850, but it goes into 4 cylinder mode sooner, and stay there longer because of the mechanical advantage that the 4.10s provide. I can't see where it's going to use any more gas.

Did I say how much quicker and livelier the truck is now? It romps! I love it! 4.10s with 33" tires is not geared low at all. It's CORRECT. If I wanted to go fast, I'd seriously consider 4.56s.

Call Matt at Moe's. He'll give you the straight facts. He won't push you in any direction. He's a trus professional. He's running 4.56s. Matt will get you all the answers you could ever have questions for.

I'm not going to argue the merits of a gear swap at all,
Other than the price on a 4x4 is ridiculous where I live.
While you're in there you may as well toss the open carrier along with your 3.55's
in favor of a Detroit TruTrac limited slip, and the price goes up again.

Every other 4x4 I've built up with 35" or 37" tires went in for 4.56 transplant surgery within days,
and I paid a ton o ca$h every time because it was not an easy DIY job. (Specially with ARB's in both ends)

My best local quote for 4.10's on my 10' 4x4 with DTT was $3300
pretty sad considering my +200WHP over stock Supercharger kit was just $400 more than that.

For seat in the pants "bang for the buck" launch difference
My TC swap did a much better job getting off the line for just $500
than any gear swap...and was easy enough to DIY install in my driveway.

I'd love to have 4.56's
but I'm doing okay without them too,
0-60 is 5 seconds flat Rolling on 20's and 305/50R20 Grapplers.
0-60.jpg

With the blower it's about as quick as Ram can get, even with 3.55's, heavy ass AT tires.

If you can do gears for under $2k with a decent LSD, go for it! (I would too)
But if you really want to blast off the line, a 2800-3000 stall TC Kicks ass for less than 1/4 of the price.

If you're not pleased after that, you can always add a gear swap later.

But like I said, find out what you have first, If its already got 3.92's and LSD,
you'd be wasting a lot of time and money on 4.10's for almost nothing.

4.10's may get you off the line a little better than 3.55's
but you would still have to fight through the bog off the line until you hit the powerband at 2800+ RPM
Putting a higher stall TC with a 2800-3000 stall means you're launching right into the powerband instead of waiting for it.

I've done just about ever mod you can add,
Torque Converter was hands down the best bang for the buck!

If I could only have one mod, that would be IT!

Launch like a scalded dog!

You have to drop the trans to swap the TC,

it's not hard, but takes a long time on a driveway without a lift or trans jack
...about 6 hours on a 4x4 Ram. (two guys casual rate of speed, basic hand tools)

Both Drive shafts, Transfer case, exhaust from the manifolds to muffler, 4-O2 sensors,
trans cooler lines and linkages, speed/pressure sensors, crossmember and starter all come off (3 hours aprox.)
Trans DipStick tube, Dust Cover to access TC bolts at fly wheel, need to crank engine over by hand
to rotate access to all 4 TC bolts by putting a breaker bar on the front of the crank pulley. Cake!

Top up new TC with fluid, Swap TC's and reverse install.
Need to rotate new TC onto pump shaft and wiggle until it clicks in twice to fully seat
making sure you reach both splined cogs inside the TC.

Slightly. But it's not enough that I would swap from 3.92 to 4.10. If you have 3.55 I would go to 4.10

Would a torque converter give you benefits any where else besides launching? I am looking to put 4.10s in my 4X4.

For drag racers, yes better shift recovery at every gear change.

The con's are higher trans temps, lower fuel economy,
and not a good mod for 4x4's who do any hardcore off roading in low range.

Lower Gears are a much better mod for off road....4.56's at least!

if my truck would have come with 3.92s I probqbly wouldn't have done the 4.10s. So in a twisted sort of way, I'm glad it had the 3.55s.

4.10s/33"/545RFE Is a pretty good combo.

For 35" or bigger tires, or if you want even more giddy up, I'd definitely go 4.56. I know that sounds really low, but it's not.

I could see how guys are happy with a stall converter. These trucks in stock form, are slow out of the hole. At least mine is. The 4.10s will get you out of the hole a little quicker, but not a whole lot. But once you get moving just a little bit, those 4.10s really go to work.

Is a stall converter hard on the transmission?

Is the stock torque converter set up for fuel economy? Is it set up for smoothness? Both?

4.10s, 2800 converter, and 30" tires are where it's at. ;)

Edit; FWIW 4.10s and 30" tires is equivalent to 4.56s and 33" tires

You'll need:

Ring & Pinion Front 8" Front
Ring & Pinion 9.25" Rear
Detroit TruTrac or Auburn Limited Slip Diff (rear only)
Master Install Kit 9.25" Rear
Master Install Kit 8.0" Front

Should run around $1400

Matt stocks all the above:

Moe's Performance

Install quotes will vary from shop to shop,
Fluids, Shop Supplies, Labor will run you another $1k , but could be as high as $1500 ($750 per end here)
But some shops wont warranty the gears unless they supply and install
...and their prices will likely be higher than Matt's
