I have a VP3 8.4 radio now without nav. I found several on eBay with model numbers of VP3 but have navigation. Can I just update my screen? is the nav in the software or the unit itself?

Be careful a lot of wrecking yards think that all 8.4's have Nav because the factory description says Nav ready. Unless it was activated by a dealer it is not Nav. I think it costs around 700.00 to have it activated. You wouldn't know if it had been activated untill you turned it on. The RA4 is the only one that has Nav from the factory you can get them for around 400.00 its a plug and play to install an RA4 in your truck. If you find one of them make sure it's a VP4 NA wich stands for North America the other versions don't have real time traffic and make sure it is out of a Ram pickup. The RA4 also has 3D maps and HD Radio the RA3 does not.

VP3 or RA3 has navigation "available". It is a feature that the dealer can unlock on the radio. I'm not sure if anyone has ever gotten a transplanted radio unlocked for Nav. I know several that ended up listing their RA3 for sale and went for the RA4 to get the Nav features.

if you have an ra3 you can "turn on" nav by going to the dealer and having it activated for a charge, The ra4 has the nav already active

For what you would pay to get the dealer to activate the nav ($400-600), you would be better off selling your RA3 for around $200-250 and paying around $450-500 for a RA4.

the vp3 or ra3 radio is nav capable. my 2015 came with the ra3, dealer wanted out $600 to add the nav upgrade. i went the navrepair.com and its on sale only $499. you could also buy a ra4 and sell the ra3. the ra4 has nav standard and a couple more features like 3d maps... for me i don't really need 3d maps just wanted in dash nav on the big 8.4 so i just upgraded mine it seemed easier for me.

when you upgrade the ra3 its just a code they give you to put in and its activated.

I just got the RA4 in last weekend and my favorite feature is the HD Radio. I didn't realize how staticy and fickle my favorite stations were until I heard them in HD, night and day difference.

I found a guy selling a RA4 on ebay and in the description it said "If you have a RA3 / VP3 / 8.4A / with no Navigation in your vehicle please contact me for a special offer" so I sent him a message. I thought he would reply back with a trade in offer, but he claims he can activate it and unlock the NAV feature on the RA3 radio's for $200.

That seemed really cheap so I asked him "how can you do it so cheap, is everyting legit? I wouldn't have any problems down the road? Most dealers want $600 to activate the nav, that is why it is better to just buy a VP4 radio," and this was his reply "Let's just say you are cutting the middle man. Which in this case is Chrysler and the dealer. More than likely they get $200 each from the $600 they charged. The rest goes to the actual supplier of the maps (NNG).
The activation code you will get would be the same the dealer will give you. It is permanent as long as you keep the same radio. The navigation stays with the radio, not the car. So if you replaced the radio because it breaks or something else, the new radio (if it is a VP3) will need a new activation code.
The VP4 is nicer, it adds HD radio and traffic assistance. but for some people that is not important. Is up to you".

I am in know way affiliated with this guy, all we did was exchange a few messages, and I didn't use his service because the Ram I bought had the RA4, but the guy seemed to know what he was talking about and had 100% positive feedback.

If anyone is interested I can send you his eBay user ID, and or the item number for the radio he was selling.

Thanks

Don't know but all the RA4S I see for sale are over 1200 dollars. Not worth it for me coming from an ra3

I just saw a crapload of them on LKQ, 2014 for 425.00 and 2015 for 550.00. When I checked on car parts they were averaging in the 800.00 range. I also saw a few on Schramm in the 450.00 range. Heck even eBay you can find them in the 500.00 range. Just shop around a little.

Ebay was the first place I looked. But after reading the description the ones applicable were 895-1250 range.

Am I correct in thinking that it would be beat to get 2015 version for 2015 truck ?

Not sure where or how you are looking but here are 12 for sale on LKQ from between 400.00 to 550.00. They are on ebay for similar prices as well. But 400.00 to 550.00 is a good price now a days. Just be careful sometimes they say its a VP4 when its a VP3 and you want a VP4 NA (NORTH AMERICA). There is an LKQ not to far from you in Citrus county, its in Crystal River 4950 West Norvell Bryant Highway, Crystal River, FL 34423
(352) 746-3011. I drive by it all the time when I am down there.

I just (two weeks ago) bought mine from Schram for $450, they only had 14's when I was looking, but I would have preferred a 15 if it was available.

It will say it on the uper left side back of the radio on the white identification sticker. It is kinda small. Most of the time you can call them and have them e mail you a picture of the back.of the radio to make sure. You might have to blow up the picture to see it. If it is a RA4 out of a Ram pickup U.S. model it should be a VP4 NA but I have seen them list the Canadian model several times incorrectly as a NA instead of a CA and even an RA3 as an RA4. It's always best to get a picture of the actual radio if you can.

Last question, I promise. Does it have to be out of a Ram or will any 2015 RA4 , Vp4 NA be compatible?

If you select on them it will give you more information including the source vehicle and vin. Some have picture, some do not. This one here for instance says its a RA4 but when you click on the link it shows a RA3 and its a CA (Canadian).

This one here is a RA4 / VP4 NA.

Some posting offer pics some do not. Without a picture I call first and ask for one, for instance I have been looking for a clack Laramie leather center jumpseat, they posted one, when they sent me the pictures it was a hard console out of a Laramie limited, nice console and good price at 225.00, not at all what it said was nor what I wanted.
