could be a bad connection somewhere but most likely a bad fuel gauge sending unit. it is fairly common for them to go bad and the thing that sucks is most of the time you usually have replace the fuel pump assembly to get a new one. you could possibly try getting a used one but i am not sure what years are compatible and either way you got to drop the tank or lift the box off.

Filled the tank and it started working. Still jumps. Will live with it for now. Really enjoy driving. First Mopar. 108k miles. Has been well taken care of.

Heres to bumping an old thread, but I don't know if it applies to these trucks. On older toyotas you could take the fuel sending unit apart and clean the copper windings on the unit and it would make it work like new again. I need to take mine out and see if it applies to these trucks too, since my gauge act up...

My '92 has ALL new fuel lines, pump, & sending unit... and still hangs at half-full. Even when the tank is full, it only reads half-full; once the tank hits half-full, the needle goes down normally with the gas level. I'm thinking that maybe the float is hanging, but even with repeated full tanks, and hitting potholes (hoping to jar it loose), it won't budge.

I DON'T think the early '90's instrument cluster allows for replacing individual gauges; I'd like a tach - reckon I'll get an aftermarket fuel gauge while I'm at it.
