So I've brought this up before but I know noise diagnosis is hard over a forum, but it's bugging me again. So quick background. My truck has made this noise since I bought it new. I've told the dealer about it a few times, but never really pushed them on it, and now I'm past bumper to bumper. However the noise is while accelerating so it could be covered in drive train which I still have. It has gotten louder recently I've noticed so that is why I bring it up.
Things it is not:
- I thought maybe it was a heat shield or my exhaust rattling but it is not. (pretty sure)
- Its not a tick or lifter type noise, I've had that and had bolts fixed.
- It's not aftermarket as it did it stock the day I got it new.
- Don't think its tied to the engine as it wont do it in park or neutral
- Not MDS as I can kill mds with my Pulsar and it does it either way.
1. It's hard to describe but sort of a metal sound can rattle. Almost like a ping but its not pinging. Not super loud if the music is on I usually don't hear it. If I roll down the window I can hear it but its almost more difficult due to wind and road noise.
2. It doesn't not make the noise when in neutral or park and revving. So therefore it has to be tied to the drive system making the truck move.
3. I can make it do it on command. To make it make the noise I need to be moving (40-50 seems to be easiest) When the truck has down shifted and is in a high gear, if I lug it and barely push the pedal lightly it will rattle rattle rattle as it slowly accelerates. If you push a bit harder it quits or gets hidden behind exhaust noise. It doesn't seem to do it in lower gears. Its not shifting when it does it, it remains in the same gear. More of a lugging noise.
4. The only time besides lugging that I hear it is if I'm way up in the RPM band. So if I'm towing up a hill, or really getting on it and am in the 5k rpm+ range it will do it real quick.
Its never seemed to have caused any issues with the truck. Nobody else seems to have this issue but me, as I 've asked around before. The only way to probably diagnose easily would be to have the truck on something like a dyno where you can get the drive line moving without actually moving so that you can listen and figured out where its coming from.
Any ideas? Torque converter? Transmission? Something fuel line related? Something electronic that happens when you hit the throttle? Like I said hasn't caused issues with the truck its just annoying and makes my truck sound more ghetto.
