that load is illegal where i live.

the first connection has to be a fifth wheel, second can be a ball hitch

It's legal here in Idaho.
My truck has all the towing options including I thought oil and transmission coolers. I hit 264 on the way home today and coolant was 218. Still no warning lights and pulled awesome.
Mpg on evic for the whole trip was 10.1 so probably around 9mpg hand calculated.

My build sheet shows NHDP Heavy Duty Transmission Oil Cooler and NMCP Heavy Duty Engine Cooling. Nothing about heavy duty anything in the options in my window sticker, no tow package either but I did have trailer brake controller and class IV hitch listed as options (it's an Express). It's also possible that they put that on everything...

I think the Express' may all come with the extra oil and engine coolers

Heavy Duty Cooling package in my build sheet says oil cooler, trans cooler, not sure if the radiator is bigger or not.

We drove hard today and average 222 F on the oil. I am due for a change, running Royal Purple, but putting it off for one more week. Coolant temps where around 212 F

High humidity and outside temps where 89 today in Florida.

I pull a 30' TT and I don't recall ever seeing oil temps that high. Consider I'm pulling on flat ground too but I don't recall ever being more than 10-15 above water temp.

not 100% but i think all 8 speeds already have a cooler built in. remember watching a video that mentioned them being built with both a cooler and heater designed to keep it within optimal temps

This is oil temp hitting 260 not Transmission. Trans fluid was 210 or under the whole time.

Just came home today with outside temps of 100 degrees and the truck did well. I did run the heater full blast through the defrost setting when pulling the large grades, 7% for extended periods and only hit 260 at the top. The heater on seemed to help although not ideal with outside temps so high. Windows down didn't feel it much though. 9.5 mpg for the entire trip up and back.

Are the 2013 and up with 8 speeds set up differently for oil temps? Confused why there would be such a difference.

I just pulled my setup, in the signature, from Oregon back to Idaho Falls yesterday and today. I didn't watch it all the time, but I remember looking at one point when the outside temperature showed 107 and the oil was around 240 with the engine at around 220 and transmission at around 180. I saw the engine at 230 when pulling up King Hill, and we had the A/C going the whole time.

I just pulled in from a turn and burn down south and watched mine today. Peaked at 120 celcius (258F or so) coming up grades then dropped back down to 111-116 celcius on the flats. I run penzoil platinum synthetic and it seems to run hotter than the Mobile 1 synth I used to use. Maybe its just me.

This is very typical when pulling my 4800# travel trailer. Pentastar, 8 speed, 3.21.

I pull a travel trailer as well. Would it be worth the installation of an "oil cooler"? I already have a transmission cooler..

An oil cooler is always good but why put one on if you don't need it? What does the oil temperature run when towing? Do you use synthetic oil meeting the Chrysler spec?

I do run synthetic oil, all changed at the Ram dealership locally. Side-note; does synthetic oil run hotter or cooler?

Two days ago, while the outside temperature was near 100; I pulled the travel trailer 100 miles and the oil temperature was highest amongst the coolant temperature and transmission temperature. The oil temp did not hit the "hot" but got about 75% towards it.

How hot was the oil temperature?

I don't recall the digital readout as I was looking at the bar reading more. I think around 230 for the oil temp.

230 is really not too hot in my opinion. In the post above you will notice my oil temperature was 226. I'm guessing that you don't need an additional oil cooler. The next time you are pulling your trailer notice what the digital readout indicates for oil temperature. As far as I know I don't have a bar readout for oil temperature. Good luck.

I have seen my oil temps read up to 250F on occasion pulling a heavy load up a steep grade. I'm concerned, but not too worried. I have my truck set to monitor coolant, oil, and transmission temps with physical numbers and bar readout. The bar read out at 240+ is only showing slightly above mid temps on the scale. Once over the hill or steep grade, the temps drop down to normal. Pulling our trailer, the oil temps run 220-230 which is only 15-25 degrees above normal temps without towing. I'll be switching to Mobil 1 tonight to see if it helps this weekend camping. My other thought was to change the thermostat to a 180 degree. This should drop the oil temps in the process. Any thoughts

Paul
