Adapting Ipod Cord to USB in 2010 Ram

I have a 2010 SLT+ with the RES radio. It doesn't have a USB port (not even the hidden one in the dash), just the Ipod 16 pin connector in the top glove box. I have an adapter that with a female 30 pin to a female USB adapter, essentially turning the ipod plug into a usb port of its own.

Will this work? if so how?

Should work with a thumb drive.

I just tried the thumb drive and comes up comm error. Does it have to be a specific audio file type?
Ex. Mp3
