it was the starter guys. the wire that goes from the battery to the starter. the wrench touched the bolt head on the header to the bolt head on the starter. alternator has nothing to do with it unless the surge went through the starter wire and continued to the alternator.
nick, your lights are dimming because the rpms are so low. in no way is that an indication of a bad alternator. the engine (at say 400rpms at the bottom of the surge) isnt turning the belt fast enough, in turn turning the alternator fast enough to produce the required light to keep everything consistently bright
