In the market for a used Ram 1500, and I've been reading about how people are changing their odometer readings using AlfaOBD. Is there a way in AlfaOBD to check if this has actually been done? In other words, is there a menu option to read the 'true' mileage of a truck and/or engine? What's to stop people selling a truck with 300k on it and simply resetting the odometer to 150k?

Please don't answer, 'the law'

That's a good question. I think most sellers might get uptight about a potential buyer hooking up to the diagnostics port, but a cool idea, if it were possible.

I've read that when the odometer is adjusted, the idle and runtime clocks don't always tally correctly. That would be an easy check, but I'm uncertain how often this happens.

I've never changed an odometer or played with those settings. I'm looking forward to hearing more from those who have.

And, welcome.gif to Ram Forum.

Thanks. I'll see if I can find more threads on the odometer/runtime tally...

But yeah, I get that some sellers might worry about me hooking up an app that can change settings. That said, the last used vehicle I bought was from a dealership and the salesman had no issues with me hooking up AlfaOBD.

If memory serves me correctly, it wouldn't tell you the odometer was changed but the vehicle mileage is recorded is several places, mainly the ECM and TCM whih I think you can read using AlfaOBD.

I looked everywhere in AlfaOBD for mileage-related items, but I only see the odometer correction under the instrument panel.

The transmission area only has a few options.

If you can find the other locations, please post. TIA

Now, this has me curious.

Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) Starter Inhibit: 536862.72 Miles

Not that I could live long enough to hit this mileage, but what could this be? LOL
My truck will automatically disable itself at 536K miles?

Basically crosses over to 999,999.05 kilometers is my understanding of why it stops at 621370.6.
I know the dealers can tell how many miles are on the truck when they hook up to the putor

LOL. Of course, I forgot about the metric ceiling on the Odometer.

I'm guessing those Odometer readings in the Engine module/read system status/ are non-volatile for good reason.

Not bad, the OP could proof the mileage with AlfaOBD, as was asked.

And, I'm happy because I learned a new AlfaOBD test.

Now I need to understand where these readings are derived from and why they're all a slight bit different from the Odometer in the EVIC.

^^^ this exactly
Even though the odometer can read in miles, in the background it's handled in kilometers.

Mileage for each wheel is tracked individually, the numbers are different due to all four wheels rotate at different speeds while turning and even doing burnouts. I'm guessing @Wild one mileage on the rear wheels of his vehicles have a few more hundred kilometers than the fronts... LOL

That makes sense.

When did they stop tracking the ring gear in the rear differential for speed monitoring on Ram trucks?

Probably at least 25 years ago now,as i'm pretty sure when they introduced the hemi back into the trucks in 2003,they were already using the wheel speed sensors for odometer readings

As I recall from my days in automotive (retired in 2017), the engine control module and other modules remembered the odometer value. The odometer value, along with other protected values (reflash count was one), sat in protective memory, and to change these values, you needed a dongle for your PC that would allow the change. This was how it was at GM and Ford, but I never worked for Chrysler. I'm sure they had something very similar since odometer values were under the government's watchful eye.

Am I a bad person for questioning OP's motives? Registers today and the first thing on their mind is how one might be caught tampering with an odometer. Hmmmm.

First thing I thought of when I read the first post. haha

A few years ago when I upgraded my 2016 to the premium cluster and corrected the mileage I do remember seeing two places where the mileage was stored. I believe it was the PCM and the cluster. I think they might have changed the software since then because I have never seen it again.
